Review: Cobra AMP Cell Hybrid

Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good 2.0.
Much of what I found for the Cobra AMP Cell 3-wood, I found to be true of the Cobra AMP Cell Hybrid.   Thus the motto Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good 2.0. I think you could use that motto for many aspects of life, but it seemed especially true of the Cobra AMP Cell hybrid.  In 2013 Cobra introduced a plethora of color options for their woods and irons.  Red, Blue, Orange, and Silver.  This allows you find a look that fits your style and personality.  While it is just paint, it can make an impact on how you view your clubs.  If you are tired of white or black, now you can choose from these colors.  I really liked the look of the blue painted woods.  I started with the ‘blue bomber” Cobra AMP Cell driver earlier this year.  Since I liked that so much I thought it would great to see how the matching hybrid would perform in my bag.
I went with the stock set-up in a stiff flex and started playing it at 18*.  What makes the new Cobra AMP Cell line so great is the “My Fly” hosel technology which allows you to adjust the loft of the club without having a major impact on face angle because of the “Smart Pad” sole design.  Once I got this club on the course the first thing that I noticed was how good it felt.  The Cobra AMP Cell line of woods are probably the best feeling clubs made in 2013.  It is that perfect blend of metallic and composite.  The face feels amazingly hot, but yet there is a muted sound to it which is pleasant to the ear.  What is nice about this hybrid is that it has a decent sized face so even on miss-hits it still felt really good, yet has a compact body.  It wasn’t a dead feeling when you missed the center, you could feel the difference, but it still wasn’t harsh.  So with the E9 face technology and great feeling AMP characteristics, it is just a matter of getting it dialed in.

Great looks and great feel don’t necessarily mean great performance.  But the Cobra AMP Cell hybrid offers great playability.  I started with it very stock neutral set-up and had great success.  I was hitting the ball very straight and very high.  It had good distance, but like the driver and 3-wood the lofts seem to play higher than marked.  I lowered the “My Fly” loft to 16* and now this club came to life.  It played how I normally play an 18* hybrid.  Over the course of the next 4 rounds I started hitting the trajectory and distance I was looking for.  I wasn’t quite as consistent direction wise as I wanted with this hybrid, but the feel and trajectory were very consistent.

I think my consistency problems came from the stock shaft which I’m not really sure what it is. It just says Cobra on it but the biggest issue is that it is only 58 grams in the stiff flex which is really light for a hybrid shaft.  I think this threw off my swing a little with this club.  If I concentrated on my tempo and control I hit this hybrid very well, but when I just went hard after the ball, it was a little wild.  The grip and headcover are pretty standard stuff, a Lamkin REL 3Gen 360 grip and a long headcover with a cutout handle.

A hybrid has to do more than a driver or 3-wood in terms of playability.  Typically a hybrid is called upon to hit shots off the tee, from the fairway, out of the rough and even in a fairway bunker.  I think to be a versatile hybrid, the body needs to be compact.  The Cobra AMP cell hybrid is that perfect combo of forgiving size, yet compact shape.  I hit this hybrid out of every scenario imaginable and it really shined in each situation.  The long rough shots are some of the most critical for my game.  I hit my 4 iron around 195 yards out of the rough and at times I really need that 210 mark to reach the green.  This is one of the best hybrids out of the rough.  The smooth lines seemed to cut through the grass as well as any hybrid.  From the other lies I had good success too, but it is slightly different from some other hybrids  so I needed a couple adjustments.  From the tee it is a true “blue bomber”.  From the fairway and sand it had a tendency to dig a little more than other hybrids.  The reason is that the AMP cell hybrid has a more rounded sole from heel to toe.  I think this is why it hit so well out of the rough, but could dig a little more in other conditions.  There is nothing wrong with a rounded sole, it is just a style that fits some and might not work for others.

The Cobra AMP Cell hybrid is a very solid hybrid head for 2013.  It offers great looks, amazing feel and trajectory.  I think a reshaft might be  in order to tighten up the consistency in terms of control.  I think the slower swing speed golfer might really like this club and shaft combo, but if you swing hard and fast, you are going to need a different shaft.  But considering what a change took place when I reshafted the driver, reshafting this hybrid might be a huge change too. In general the whole AMP Cell line seems to hit slightly higher than the stated lofts so that can be a real benefit for some who need more elevation.  With the right shaft and the “My Fly” technology dialed in,  you can get the most out of this club. The Cobra AMP Cell hybrid; Looks good, Feels good and Plays good. 2.0!
