REVIEW: ECCO BIOM Cool Pro Shoes

Over the years, walking the floor of the PGA Fashion Show in Las Vegas, I have had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time at the Ecco Golf booth.  There is always a level of passion in the conversation with their employees representing the product.  There are no golf pants, no shirts, no outerwear, …it’s just shoes at Ecco.  But, it isn’t just shoes, it’s shoes that are done extraordinary and their employees love informing their stakeholders about what has proven to be one of the best made shoe in the game.

The Danish shoe manufacturer has a reputation in golf that began at the 2010 Masters Tournament when Fred Couples walked the fairways of Augusta National in Ecco Hybrids. Those black street shoes turned golf shoes that had everyone talking.  Here is a guy plagued with back issues, and he’s walking the fairway’s of Augusta in shoes that look like they came from the streets of Encinitas, CA.  Those shoes put Ecco on the golf map and since then, they haven’t left.

One aspect that Ecco remains proud of, and rightfully so, is that they own all of their leather tanneries.  In addition to their own shoes, they supply leather to other sports and automobile industries.  Ecco is known for using Yak leather which is known to be extremely durable and abrasion resistant.  Look around any established private country club, and you’ll usually find a stable of Ecco offerings for their membership.

This past month, I had the opportunity to examine the Biom Cool Pro shoe from Ecco Golf. Biom is a technology used both in their golf and casual shoes.  Biom is their foot-shaped last designed to provide lasting comfort and stability throughout your entire round.  The Biom Cool Pro also incorporates another Ecco technology called Fluidform which are ergonomically advanced soles that frame the foot and bring it closer to the ground allowing natural motion and better control according to Ecco.  Biom Natural Motion is the result of studying 2,500 individual foot-scans. According to Ecco it is the most natural shaped last available allowing the foot to move and flex in its natural way.

The Cool Pro’s are constructed with premium Yak leather and 100% waterproof Gore-Tex surround.  This provides 360 degree climate comfort keeping water out yet allowing perspiration to escape. The Yak hides are cut into very thin leather which reduces weight without sacrificing performance.  The ultimate combination of comfort, breathability, performance, and quality.

Out of the box, for every Ecco golf shoe I have had, you can tell you’re holding a well-constructed shoe made from high-quality leather.  I am a US size 10 EE, and in Ecco sizing the 44 seems to be right fit although in some models, I found success in the 43.  The Cool Pro shoes is a naturally wide shoe and fits very well for golfers requiring a wide shoe.  Once on the foot, I immediately noticed however comfortable these shoes were.  I know we hear about out-of-the-box comfort a lot, but I didn’t want to use these shoes for golf, I just wanted to wear them to work.  Such an unbelievably comfortable shoe that struck my attention immediately.  For someone with a wide foot, this is an important aspect and these shoes feel absolutely wonderful on the foot while walking over an extensive period of time.

The Cool Pro’s bear the Ecco Tri-Fi-Grip.  Designed with three different zones, stability, durability, and rotational support constructed with Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) which is an extremely platform for comfort.

Over the years, I have gravitated toward spike-less shoes for their convince and comfort.  I appreciate wearing them right to the course without having to perform the balancing act in the parking lot changing shoes.  Just the same, I like jumping into the car right after the round.  As mentioned, the Cool Pro’s are probably the most comfortable shoe I’ve had on my feet for casual wear or golf.  It is without question the most notable feature about these shoes.  Add in the light durability of Yak leather and actual Gore-Tex waterproofing and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better shoe for the 2020 season.
