Review: Iliac Rancher Polo

Classic Look with a Modern Interpretation
How would you make the perfect polo shirt?  While there might not be a consensus on the answer to that question, the Rancher Polo’s design is about as close to the answers I would give.  Lightweight dry fit material, slim cut, long torso, structured collar, and shorter sleeves.  The Rancher polo hit every one of my needs.
The first noticeable feature is the lightweight dry fit material.  Most often golf is played in warm weather, sometimes hot weather.  But even if it is played in the cold, layers are necessary so lightweight is still going to be good.  This polo uses some of the lightest material I’ve ever seen in a polo, yet thick enough to have somebody to the shirt.

The slim cut is really nice, no wider shirt at the armpits or sail sides around the mid-section, yet even if you have a few extra pounds around the middle; it won’t make you look like a sausage.

The long torso is nice because there is nothing worse than tucking in a shirt at the beginning of the round, only to have it untucked a few holes in because it isn’t long enough.  This also offers a greater variety of body shapes that it can fit.  While the long torso doesn’t work for leaving it untucked, that style never really looks good for golfing anyways.

The structured collar is much more important that some might think.  I’ve got a handful of polos that look great and fit well until you get to the collar.  It turns up, rolls under or somehow just looks sloppy.  While the ranger has a plaid patterned collar which may not be for everyone, the structured nature of it looks perfect.

And finally it is nice to have shorter sleeves.  Sometimes the sleeves can get a little long and almost reach down to the elbows.  That too tends to look a little sloppy and isn’t as comfortable.  How many times have you seen golfers pulling up their short sleeves shirts to their shoulders?  Not with the rancher, nice short sleeves.

This polo really covers everything I want in a polo.  The only drawback I could see that would keep people from buying this polo is the plaid collar.  It looks nice and has a great classic look, but it isn’t for everyone.  It is on the higher end of cost, but again you get what you are paying for, a near perfect polo.

Review: Iliac Rancher Polo
Looking back at old golf photos you see golfers in cardigans all the time, it was a staple in golf apparel.  But it isn’t necessarily modern.  The Iliac cardigan I received was a red soft performance fleece material with a number of black accents, specifically the black elbow pads.
I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off, I tend to wear a little more modern styles, but I thought it would be great to do a throwback apparel day.  So I put on a black polo with black pants and my red cardigan and off to the courses I went.  I was surprised at the number of compliments I received on this combo.  I wasn’t expecting it, but many said they really liked the retro/classic cardigan look.

The cardigan itself is so soft and has a zipper in the front holding it together.  It has a 2 ended zipper so it can zip up or zip down.  It was nice to offer just a little opening at the bottom looked very nice when I was wearing.  It was a nice weight to play golf in during the fall.  Thin, warm, but not bulky.

So if you long for the yester-years of golf, check out this cardigan for a classic, comfortable look.

Overall I just love Iliac products.  I find them to be a great balance of classic looks with modern touches.  The catalog is full of great accessories and apparel, just about everything under the sun for that classic golf look.
