MIZUNO JPX EZ IRONS

This is my definitive Mizuno JPX EZ Irons Review

I was able to use these irons for a good number of rounds before writing this review and got a good feel for them.

These are my thoughts on the clubs performance and  experience using them.

I’ve been at the range more over the last month than I probably have been in the past 5 years combined.  Coaching high school golf has me watching golfers work on their swings, both players on my team and the golfers next to them, on the range.  I seem to see three combined issues with most beginner golfers;  low launch, slices to the right and  lacking distance.  The Mizuno JPX EZ irons fix all three of these problems giving amateurs shots that look like the pros.
Golf is a hard sport.  There is simply no way around it.  While it may not take the pure physical demands of other sports, the precession required to hit that little white ball over and over during a round until it finally reaches the hole is difficult to master.  Even the greatest of athletes from other sports have struggled to play the game of golf, what chance do us weekend warrior have?  Mizuno JPX EZ irons are the best beginners irons you can buy.  It will make the game easier for so many golfers that hit a weak and low slice.

The first thing that will jump out at you with the Mizuno JPX-EZ irons is the very large sole which holds most of the weighting of the iron head for easier, higher launch.  Even with what some call “jacked” lofts, these still hit higher than my other irons of the same number.  That low mass really picks the ball off the ground and throws it way up in the air.

The second feature that you will notice is the ample off-set of the heads.  This is designed to keep it away from the right side.  Many beginning golfers don’t have the timing of their swing quite right and they tend to lose balls to the right.  Off-set will help with that and allow them to get the club head back to a square position at impact.  I personally had initial struggles using these with my timing, since I can get clubs with no off-set squared up, these ended up giving me  a case of the lefts.  I laid off a little on my timing and then I found that sweet spot where the ball just wanted to go straight.

The third feature that golfers want is distance.  The Mizuno JPX-EZ irons are 10 yards longer than my other clubs.  They are the longest irons I’ve hit.  I don’t know if I personally want that, but I know a whole bunch of golfers that would love that extra 10 yards.  It gives them confidence and also creates better gap spacing between clubs.  I’ve watched people hit just about every iron in their bag the same distance.  These will create the proper distances from club to club.  I have the Flightscope chart below that explains the longer distance.  The combination of higher launch and lower spin makes for longer irons.

These are not forged and have a big cavity back.  That doesn’t mean they feel bad, they just have a slightly more hollow feeling than Mizuno’s forged irons.  I don’t think anyone is going to expect a buttery pure feel with these, it isn’t really the target audience.  The extra mass out on the toe of the cavity does help create a solid feeling at impact as well as balance out the club very nicely.  The thin face feels explosive and is very forgiving.  You can hit it all over the face and still have great results.

Mizuno JPX EZ 8 Iron Stats

Data from Flightscope X2 Tour Launch Monitor

 Spin: 5377 rpms

 Launch Angle: 26.4*

 Club Head Speed: 85.2 mph

Dispersion: 3.3 yds

 Ball Speed: 108.5 mph

 Total Distance: 165.6 yds

 Carry Distance: 160.2 yds

I got these on the course for a number of spring rounds and had some great results once I got things figured out.  Like I had mentioned above, going from players irons to game improvement irons took a few holes adjustment.  Once that adjustment was made,  my iron game went on auto-pilot, point and shoot at the pin.  It was high and straight all day long.  The progressive cavity backs really made distance control club to club a breeze and made hitting the long irons even easier.  It was almost like hitting a hybrid with the 4 and 5 iron.  The scoring irons had a little less cavity allowing for more feel and precision on approach shots.

The turf interaction is also something amateurs will like because they can hit into the grass without fear of digging a hole.  I  have an aggressive move into the turf and regularly take large divots, but with the Mizuno JPX-EZ irons I rarely had much more than a little tuft of grass.  The thick sole paired with the blunted leading edge wants to slide on top of the turf rather than removing a chunk of sod.

Summary

Mizuno put all these features into a really attactive package.  The 4-GW set looks great in the bag.  It doesn’t look like a high handicap set.  The dark smoke finish with some orange accents looks really nice.  The stock DG steel shafts are a high quality touch with Mizuno stock grips, you have a set that will be easy to hit for a long time.

Mizuno is doing a second round of their #PlayFamously campaign.  The JPX-EZ will be the iron of choice for those chosen as part of this event.  It will be a great way for a bunch of amateurs to get the pro experience and even hit some shots that look like they were hit by pros.  The Mizuno JPX-EZ irons hit the ball higher, straighter and longer so that golfers can hit pro shots with their amateur skills.
