Mizuno RB Tour Golf Balls Review

This is my official Mizuno Golf Balls Review for 2021.

I used the Mizuno Tour and Tour X golf balls for many rounds before writing this review.

I have been testing and reviewing golf products for over 10 years now!

Here are my thoughts.

Mizuno is best known in golf for its golf clubs, but in reality they are one of the largest sporting goods manufacturers in the world. Baseball, Soccer, Running and Volleyball to name a few. The big news from this year’s PGA Show in Orlando was that Mizuno was going to have a golf ball in North America this year. The buzz was real and I got a chance to put them to the test.
As it’s been said before, a golf ball is the only piece of equipment that is played for every shot. Mizuno has all the clubs to play the golf ball, but until this year, they never released it to the North American market. Speaking with Chris Voshall, a lead engineer for Mizuno, he said these two models are the first of a global launch for Mizuno golf balls. For Mizuno, there is North America and the rest of the world in terms of product offerings. The North American market doesn’t necessarily see all of the products the rest of the world sees.

When you select a golf ball in today’s market, there are two types to pick from. A golf ball that does everything well, or one that does one thing really well. The new RB Tour and RB Tour X golf balls from Mizuno fit into the first category in which they do many things well. Technology in golf is about materials and application. Mizuno has created a ball that is very close in many aspects to any other tour level golf ball on the market, but what makes them unique is the dimple design. As described by Mizuno, “The new Cone (C) Dimple is the result of 12 years wind tunnel testing at Mizuno’s MT (Mizuno Technics) test facility. The C-Dimple creates more trigger points to keep fast flowing air close to the ball’s surface for longer – simultaneously reducing drag, and strengthening trajectory.” The easiest way to describe them is like a cone with a flat bottom. The flat bottom is what allows the air to be disrupted as it moves across the surface, allowing the air-stream to move faster across the ball and create a more stable ball flight. The same technology is being used in drivers today. Looking at the crown of a driver, most companies have air trips to move the air faster along the surface to make the club move faster while in swing. They remind me very much of Cut golf balls.

RB Tour and Tour X

A faster tour ball with incredible performance in the wind – due to Mizuno’s drag reducing C-Dimple. Soft and responsive around the greens – The RB Tour Balls have a 4 piece construction and high traction urethane cover. Mid/low driver spin golf balls for flat to upward attack angles.

The main difference between the two is the Tour will have more driver spin! See the stats below.

330 Dimple Pattern: Configured for more stable ball flight.

4 Piece Construction: Adapted for stability at high ball speeds.

Refined Urethane Cover

In order to create the control we would like for any given shot, the cover needs to impart contact with the grooves on irons and wedges. I found the first ball I tested with my 7 iron did not hold up very well after 20 shots. I am a lower spinning player to start with, so having the cover get some scuffs and cuts quickly was a bit surprising. However, there is nothing to be alarmed about. As I mentioned earlier, these particular golf balls are trying to meet the needs of all demands of play, not just one demand. Every premium golf ball with a urethane cover will experience scuffs and cuts.

Feel is an opinion when it comes to golf ball performance. Feel cannot be standardized, but there is a general consensus soft versus firm can be utilized as a description. I place the new Mizuno RB Tour golf balls in the very soft category. It should also be noted that the compression of the golf balls are listed as soft. This is one of the reasons why I got lower ball speeds in testing over other golf balls with higher compressions. A firm core can rebound faster than a softer core. The chipping and putting with both models will give you a soft touch and lots of control. I had no problem controlling either of them with a wedge. The softer compression and cover made putting enjoyable off the face of the club.

Summary

Mizuno has long been known for irons around our part of the world. Soon it will be known for golf balls here as well. The technology they bring to the dimple patterns and flight control is a breath of fresh air. These golf balls won’t be in the long drive contest, but if you are looking for a golf ball that checks all the boxes, the Mizuno RB Tour and RB Tour X will be a treat to play.
