Phoenix, AZ
Plan your Next Golf Vacation www.visitphoenix.com
Does your weather forecast sound like this for the first week of January; 75 degrees, sunny, 25% humidity and 0% chance of precipitation? Mine certainly doesn’t in St. Paul, MN, so when I got the itch to go golfing in January; I went looking for a destination. At this time of year you can pretty much rule out ¾ of the country because of cold weather. So as I scoured the Internet looking for places to visit, I ran across, www.visitphoenix.com. It is the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitor’s Bureau’s website.
This site is full of helpful information about traveling or even moving to Phoenix. Obviously, my main focus was golf, so I clicked on the golf tab; there I learned that the Greater Phoenix Metro has 236 golf courses open for public play. That is a lot of golf, for even the most serious golf variety junkie. From there you can find information about most of those courses and links to their websites. In no time I had planned out my visit and which courses I would be playing during my vacation.
But we all know that there is more to a vacation than just golf, what about lodging, food, and other activities. Well, Phoenix was not short on other things to do as well. There is such a variety of offerings when it comes to lodging from the basic hotel room, to the houses available for rent on the high end golf courses, any size group on any budget should be able to find a place to stay in the valley.
As you travel to Phoenix, you may have others in your group that are not so into golf, but that is just fine, there are more than enough other activities to do in the desert. The CVB’s website has a list of other activities going on. There is calendar with events, art exhibits, auto auctions, MLB Spring Training, FBR Open, P.F Chang Marathon, etc. There is also a great listing of other outdoor activities. The list of hiking trails covered the entire valley and made it easy to find great mountain hikes labeled from easy to very difficult. If you want to be more adventurous and take a jeep tour of the desert, links to that were included.
If your significant other plans on joining you for vacation, almost every resort has a spa facility with unique and relaxing treatments. If shopping is more her fancy, the indoor mall and outdoor shops can more than max out a credit card. With a zoo, water parks, resorts, professional sports teams, and parks, children will never run out of fun things to do in the sun.
The area of Phoenix clearly has a true southwest feel with Hispanic influence. Restaurants are available in every flavor and style imaginable. I got to sample some local food at the Greene House at Kierland Commons in Phoenix. It offers a quaint atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The local restaurant offered excellent food in a cozy atmosphere.
Doug Mackenzie, the director of communications for the Greater Phoenix CVB, offered insights and local knowledge about visiting Phoenix. The list of things going on, the conventions, the sporting events, and the things to do were endless.
The only reason not to visit Phoenix might be is if you like cold weather and snow. But even that can be enjoyed from Phoenix with a 2-hour drive north to Flagstaff.
Because Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the US, travel to, from and within the Greater Phoenix Metro is very easy. Sky Harbor Airport has great rates for flying into the city, the interstate highway system is very easy to use and wide enough to accommodate most traffic, and the new light rail system make downtown travel even easier. You can tell as you drive around, that this city was planned well for travel and traffic.
If you haven’t picked your next golf destination, put Phoenix on the top of your list. Obliviously, it gets hot in the summer, but rates are also much cheaper, so it all depends on your priorities and timing. Winter is beautiful but a little pricier, while summer is flat out cheap, but with sweltering heat. No matter what your forecast might look like, with 236 golf courses, Phoenix always looks better.
