Review: Srixon Z355 3-wood

ActionMass for High and Straight Shots
Have you heard the comment?  “They play a different game than the rest of us” or “I play a different game than you do”.  That is the reality of golf, +6 handicap vs. -30 handicap.  We all play on the same courses, but with very different results.  It also is a good reminder that we should play different clubs too.  Words like feel, working the ball, and optimal numbers might sound great to the low handicap golfer, but consistent, straight and high are good words for a high-handicap golfer to use.  The Srixon Z355 3-wood with ActionMass will have them using those words; high, straight and consistent.

Srixon created a line of game improvement clubs that actually look really good.  They have a simplistic look to them that can appeal to a higher handicap golfer that wants good looking clubs.  The Z355 line does it differently for the golfer struggling with consistency and good shots.  Instead of chunky off-set clubs, they went ActionMass, which is their take on counter-balancing.  Very heavy heads with ActionMass (extra weight low on the sole) and lightweight shafts create a club for golfers with less than repeatable swings.  The head heavy weight is to help them get and keep the club on better swing planes for more consistent results.

I found that the Z355 3-wood did that with high, straight shots.  It seem like the ActionMass goes under the ball to pick it off the ground and lift it high into the air.  The resulting shot was also straight with good spin to keep it online.  It makes sense as you drop the weight as low as possible in a club, it will help the club drop under the ball and lift it up. Although this club had additional head weight, it felt fairly hollow at impact with a stainless steel ting as it hit the ball.

The Srixon Z355 3-wood has a big footprint with a shallow face to inspire confidence.  The black crown and sole are paired with a silver face.  It sets up pretty square at address and has a lot of beef behind the ball.  It looks really nice behind the ball on a tee, because of the size, while at times on the fairway I prefer a slightly smaller head.

The Miyazaki shaft is a lightweight counter balanced model that feels really good and whips the club head into the ball. The Golf Pride grip is really nice as is the white and black headcover.  It is a good looking package.  The club has a swingweight of D5 which is considerably different than other 3-woods.  The counter-balance is more noticeable in this club.

The ActionMass on the Srixon Z355 3-wood caused me a little difficultly adjusting to this club.  I’ve struggled with other counter-balanced 3-woods in the past too.  It was straight and consistent, just right of line I wanted.  It didn’t curve or slice, just a super consistent push right.  Once I dialed in my body alignment, it offered some good results.  There weren’t banana balls or duck hooks, just high and straight shots with pretty good distance. The Srixon Z355 has ActionMass sole weighting which works by hitting the ball high and straight a consistent yardage.
