Review: Srixon Z355 Hybrid

ActionMass for High and Straight Shots
Have you heard the comment?  “They play a different game than the rest of us” or “I play a different game than you do”.  That is the reality of golf, +6 handicap vs. -30 handicap.  We all play on the same courses, but with very different results.  It also is a good reminder that we should play different clubs too.  Words like feel, working the ball, and optimal numbers might sound great to the low handicap golfer, but consistent, straight and high are good words for a high-handicap golfer to use.  The Srixon Z355 hybrid with ActionMass will have them using those words; high, straight and consistent.

Srixon created a line of game improvement clubs that don’t look like it.  They are about as classic of a look as you will find in something aimed for higher handicap golfers.  The Z355 line does it differently for the golfer struggling with consistency and good shots.  Instead of chunky off-set clubs, they went ActionMass, which is their take on counter-balancing.  Very heavy heads with ActionMass (extra weight low on the sole) and lightweight shafts create a club for golfers with less than repeatable swings.  The head heavy weight is to help them get and keep the club on better swing planes for more consistent results.

I found that the Z355 hybrid did that with high, straight shots.  It seem like the ActionMass goes under the ball to pick it off the ground and lift it high into the air.  The resulting shot was also straight with good spin to keep it online.  It makes sense as you drop the weight as low as possible in a club, it will help the club drop under the ball and lift it up.  The additional head weight also gives it a very solid feel, almost like hitting the ball with a hammer.

The club itself looks really good and is on the big side to inspire confidence.  The black crown and sole are paired with a silver face.  It sets up pretty square at address, which is nice for a hybrid which for some reason often look to be aiming left.  The sole is fairly flat so it skims the fairways nicely.  Out of the rough it is just OK.  The bigger head and flatter sole tend to bog down in the tall grass.  If the ball is sitting up, great; but down deep this one isn’t the best.

The Miyazaki Jinsoku shaft is a lightweight counter balanced model that feels really good and whips the club head into the ball.  The club has an overall swingweight of D3 so it feels fairly comparable to other hybrids.  The Golf Pride grip is really nice as is the white and black headcover.  It is a good looking package.

    • Spin: 5133 rpms
    • Launch Angle: 16.8*
    • Dispersion: 5.3 yds
    • Club Head Speed: 91.1 mph
    • Ball Speed: 129.8 mph
    • Total Distance:  205.3 yds
    • Carry Distance:  193.9 yds

This is a gap filler kind of hybrid.  The 3hybrid (19*) goes high and straight and consistently about 200 yards.  I couldn’t squeak much more out of it, but seemed to hit it the same the majority of the time.  It is great off the tee and fairway, good in moderate rough and tough out of the deep stuff.  But for a high-handicap golfer looking for some consistency from a longer distance, this could be a real game changer for them.  The Srixon Z355 has ActionMass sole weighting which works by hitting the ball high and straight a consistent yardage.
