Re-Engineered But Still The Gold Standard

This is my official review of the Titleist T100 Irons.

I’ve been using this new set of irons for over 5 rounds now and my scores were great.

These are my overall thoughts on the experience and performance of the T100 Irons.

11 years ago I wrote a review of the “new” Titleist AP2 718 irons. They were a shift in Titleist “traditional” design, and for me, became the standard by which irons are measured. Starting last year, Titleist began re-engineered and renamed their club lines. It started with the woods and now the irons. The AP irons are no more. Now they are T irons. This actually makes a lot of sense since the AP2 were the players irons, the AP1 more game improvement and AP3 more game improvement yet. It was kind of jumbled. Now T100 are the advanced design players irons, then T200 and finally T300. But even with this shift of names, the T100 are still the gold standard by which I compare new irons.

Titleist always asks that I get fit before they just place clubs in my hand to test. I think this is a great way to make sure I have their best product for me. This time I wasn’t able to coordinate with a Titleist fitter, and just went to the PGA superstore. They had the full fitting cart and launch monitor ready to go. I started with the Titleist T100 and hit a few shafts and then hit the T200 with a few shafts. I could see right away that the T100 was a good fit with the DG AMT White S300. However the “fitter” kept trying to get me into the T200 because they were longer. I tried to explain to him that I wasn’t chasing distance, for me it is about dispersion. The T100 iron shots were all in a tight circle, shorter, but tight. This really isn’t a surprise since the T200 irons are stronger lofts and designed to go further. We did conclude that one degree flat was better for my swing as was one degree strong. This made the numbers on the launch monitor ideal.

The Titleist T100 irons arrived a week later and man do they look clean in the bag. They reworked the look and cavity design of the T100 irons for a clean, slightly techy, yet compact design. I really like how they pack the weighting and multi material design into players iron. While not a compact as the CB or MB irons, these are about as small as you are going to get but still have ample forgiveness. The T100 badging is small and the minimal coloring makes these about as nice of a looking iron as you can get, considering the CG manipulation with Tungsten placement.

The biggest advancement in the Titleist T100 irons has to be the sole design. Titleist listened to player feeback and softened up the sole with more relief. The softer leading edge, the smoother trailing edge and the rounder sole makes for better turf interaction. That was the first thing i noticed on the course with the new T100 irons is how much nicer they cut into the turf and exited. The AP2 line tended to have a flatter sole, these have a much rounder sole with more camber and role. This helps off tight fairways and in long rough. While I often talk about the hard AZ turf, post overseed season can be really soft. The courses water like mad trying to get the rye grass to grow and fairways are pretty soft. I liked how these irons were versatile for both hard and soft turf.

The Titleist T100 irons are forged in a multi step process to incorporate tungsten but still be incredibly soft. You can’t tell in the blind feel test between these and a blade. I continue to be impressed by the solid feel of these irons, even with the tech and cavity design. They just feel solid yet soft on every shot. Even if you miss the center a little, they offer excellent feedback without getting harsh.

The real story on the Titleist T100 irons is performance. As I mentioned by the fitting, these irons are precise. I played them for 5 rounds and my scores were GOOD. They hit the ball what I call my standard distances, but the circle of dispersion was really small. I could attack pins and watch the ball go straight at it and stay close. I don’t want distance in my irons, I want accuracy and that is what the T100 irons offer. I played 4iron – GW in these clubs. The long irons are very easy to hit, I was impressed by their quick rise, but strong flight. The mid irons were on the flatter side of flight, but held the greens nicely and the short irons were scoring machines. I really liked having the GW too. Since that tends to be a full swing club for me, lining up with the irons is often better than the wedges.

Summary

Titleist re-engineered and re-named their irons, but that didn’t change the standard they set with this model. They offer the best of all worlds, great feel, good looks, solid forgiveness, and performance. I think you should test these out and see if they are a fit for you, they certainly are for me. Pay close attention to your fitter; distance is great and many golfers need it, but irons should be about precision and scoring, find the clubs that do that the best. The Titleist T100 irons are the gold standard in performance for me.
