Review: Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Irons

Buzz Worthy Irons without the Buzz Words

There are lots of buzz words out there right now when it comes to irons; slots, distance, multi-compound, extra-special forged, outrageous speed, super-duper forgiveness, etc.  It seems every company has some hook or angle with their new irons.  It is all with the hope of creating “buzz.”  Well the new Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons are worthy of equal buzz, even if they aren’t using all those buzz words.  These irons are one of the best sets for 2015.

If you go back a couple years to the FG Tour V2 irons, you see a similar thought.  They were (still are) one of the best sets of that year.  Many of the golfers that got them a few years ago are still playing them.  The FG Tour V4 are of the same heritage with some improvements.

The first new feature is the tungsten in the sole of the long irons.  3-7 iron have a bar of tungsten in the middle of the sole.  I found this additional weight to really help elevate those long iron shots.  I was able to hit these irons high and land them soft, without losing distance or fighting ballooning.  That lowered and centered weight seems to help square them up at impact and keep shots very straight.  I felt like I hit my long irons as well with these clubs as any I’ve ever played.

The short irons don’t have the tungsten in the sole, but don’t seem to need it.  They generate plenty of height naturally through their loft.  I could hit very high shots with the 8-GW that would stick at impact.  I didn’t have any trouble going over trees if I need to cut the corner or escape trouble.

Along with the head design is the stock shaft, DG Pro s300.  These are a flighted version of DG s300s.  I keep coming back to these shafts, even though I enjoy some of the more exotic steel shafts, the DG s300 seem to fit my swing best.  The Pro version works really well in these irons along with the tungsten weighting to easily elevate long irons and keep the high flight of the short irons in check.

The second new feature is a softening up of the lines of this iron.  The leading edge isn’t as sharp.  This leads to even less digging and better turf interaction.  The camber and radius of the sole are improved which also aids in taking less sod, but still cutting through grass to pick the ball cleanly.  The better overall turf interaction leads to cleaner, crisper, more accurate shots throughout the round.

The overall shape is a little less angular as well making them even more appealing to look at.  Their minimal off-set and smooth lines really make these one of the nicest looking irons on the market.  The cavity is weighted differently too.  Now the weight is moved away from the center and placed around the perimeter.  I didn’t notice any loss of feel or solidness on shots.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 are part of what Wilson calls their “feel” line.  They certainly have great forged feel.  They also offer the players blend of feel, looks and performance without giving up too much forgiveness.  I put these in play this spring and saw my iron game improve immediately.  It had been the weakest part of my game early in 2015 and instantly got better with these irons.  I was more accurate and more consistent.  There is a high probability that these will remain in the bag for the rest of the season.  They hit just a little higher, land a little softer and are a little bit straighter, everything I’m looking for in an iron.

Sure they don’t have all the “buzz words” or maybe don’t receive hype on other media outlets, but these irons are “buzz” worthy as one of the best sets of 2015.  They also don’t cost in excess of 1K so that makes them even more appealing to the consumer.  Go check out Wilson Staff’s FG Tour V4 Irons and get some buzz going about these worthy irons.
