The legendary art of turning common metal into gold is known as alchemy. It was thought that with the right combination of metals and magic you could create gold. While this legendary practice has yet to be accomplished, there are those that take metal do amazing things with it. What golf club designers and builders do with a hunk of molten metal is no small feat.

Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge is a forged, hand ground wedge line that offers tour like quality, spin and feel which can turn you wedge game into gold. I found them to be the easiest wedges I’ve ever hit to get lift off the ground. I think every shot I hit with these wedges had that beautiful up in the air and drop. The grind combination and loft just produced high soft shots one after another. I tested these wedges over 4 rounds of golf as well as in the iGR Carls Place DIY Simulator with FlightScope Mevo+ Pro Launch Monitor.

This is my definitive Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge review.

Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge

Forged Wedges

There is nothing that beats the feeling of forged wedge. The Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge is forged of soft carbon steel. While they aren’t gold, they do offer the gold standard when it comes to feel. I was impressed how soft yet crisp these wedge felt on every shot whether it was a full approach shot or a touch green-side chip. You can really appreciate the feedback from the head on each shot for confidence and precision. Plus not too many forged wedges out there at this price point anymore either, so consider these a great value along with great feel.

3 Loft + 3 Grinds

The Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge is currently offered in 3 lofts, 52, 56, 60. This is the most standard of wedge left set-ups. While that used to be my loft arrangement, I have moved to 50, 54, 58 since many irons sets are stronger lofted. Depending on you iron gapping or current wedge lofts will determine if this loft system works for you. I was able to make the shift back to these lofts, just needed to adjust a couple yardage numbers.

The 3 lofts come with 3 grind options, F for Full grind, A for Lower bounce, H for Higher bounce. I played all three grinds in my 3 wedges to get a feel for what each one could do. The 52F served as an approach wedge which I main hit full shots as intended. The 56A became my favorite of the three since the hard turf in AZ is great for low bounce. The 60H is a flop machine. You can open this baby up and flop the ball with ease. I think having only 6 options makes it much easier for the consumer to pick.

High Spin and Launch

The Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge is their conforming version and they do offer a non-conforming version too. However the amount of spin I got off the Pro model has me wondering how crazy the spin is on the non-pro model. These wedges spin the ball like a top. The grooves are sharp and impart all kinds of spin on the ball, often over the 10K rpms. That high spin is also paired with high launch.

These might be the easiest wedges to get in the air I’ve ever played. If you need to get your wedges up in the air without adding loft, these are it. High launch and high spin was hit with each loft on virtually every shot. What that also means is soft landing and little roll so you need to go after the pin for short putts.

On-Course Performance

The Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge took a couple rounds for me to get truly comfortable with them because of a combination of factors: different lofts, higher spin and higher launch. So these wedges played shorter yardages than my gamers. That is not a problem once you get adjusted. It also required more attacking the pin than attacking the green. With virtually no roll out you really need to have your yardages dialed in. The additional height and spin also need adjustment for the wind since they don’t cut through the wind, but spun even more. I gained confidence with these wedges each round as the ball kept getting closer and closer to the hole as I dialed them in.

Summary

The Alchemy Golf AG01-Pro Wedge offers pro-like spin and feel in their 3 loft options and 3 grinds. You will launch the ball higher and spin it more than ever before. They have some of the cleanest looks too from their logo on the high heel and their ringed ferrule. The FST 115 wedge shafts are also really stable for consistency on every shot. If want to up your wedge game without breaking the bank, these are gold. They hit higher, feel softer and spin more; what’s not to like about that?
