REVIEW: 2019 Bag Boy Push Carts

Nitron Auto-Open Push Cart

At the 2019 PGA Show, Bag Boy introduced the Nitron Auto-Open push cart.  What sets this push cart apart from previous models is in fact, in the name itself, Nitron.  Much like a pellet gun, when you fold the cart into its storage position, it compresses the air with Nitro-Piston technology.  By design, the Nitron has an easy one-step opening system.  Just pull the handle, and the cart expands on its own, then locks into place.

From the storage or transport position, the Nitron has a relatively compact profile.  One of the features I really appreciate from Bag Boy, is the affixed handle from the folded position.  This makes carrying, as well as transporting the cart, in and out of the vehicle, a whole lot easier.  The handle also serves as the base for the bag to rest on at the bottom of the cart while in the expanded position.  From there the bag is secured with two bungee straps that compliment the “Top-Lok” system for bag to cart integration.  Top-Lok prevents the bag from twisting and turning while secured.

The Nitron is equipped with a full featured glove compartment, with integrated beverage, cell phone and umbrella holders.  On the underside of the glove compartment is a accessory bag for additional storage.  The break is mechanism is a cable design with a lever mounted in the left side of the handlebars. Out of the box, the Nitron requires minimal tool free assembly of the wheels.

On the course, the three-wheeled Nitron pushes easy and rolls true.  The foam tires are maintenance free and require no air.  The real story behind the Nitron is the convenience and simplicity of the Nitron piston mechanism. This works flawlessly and is easy to engage the cart from its storage position to fully expanded.  In an industry that desperately needs innovation, the Nitron system has the cool factor and is functional as well.  Without question, my favorite Bag Boy cart of the season.

The Nitro weighs 16.75 pounds, is available in 8 different color combinations and retails for $230.

Quad XL Push Cart

In past walks, I have always gravitated to the four-wheel push carts.  Because of the four wheel design, the balance and stability of the cart just feels solid on course and down the fairways.  It seems as though you can apply the break on any lie the course presents, and the cart will remain stable and at the ready.  By design, the Quad XL has a narrower wheel base and although the push doesn’t seem as quick or agile as the three wheel, I keep reverting back to the stability and feel of the push.  I guess it is analogous to the feel of a putter head or ball.  Some like it soft, some firm.  It just comes down to preference and feel throughout 18 holes.

As mentioned, the wheelbase of the Quad XL is more narrow.  Just the same, the length of the wheelbase from front to back is also considerably shorter than the three wheel offerings.  This permits an overall compact and stable feeling push and the genesis to my preferred style of feel in a pushcart.  The overall footprint just feels right to me and compliments the walk very well.
The Quad XL has a very compact storage and transport position which permits easy maneuvering in and out of the trunk.  It does not have the base that doubles as a handle, but because of the compact footprint, it is very easy to handle.  Fully extended, the storage, handlebar, locking mechanism and break are all virtually identical to the Nitro.  Although the Quad XL does not have the Nitron piston assist, it is very easy to unfold and lock into position.  Not all brands are the same when it comes to expansion and locking, Bag Boy does this very well.

Out of the box assembly of the Quad XL is very easy and requires no tools.  Just pop the four wheels on and you’re ready to roll.  Like the Nitro, the Quad XL has maintenance free foam tires.  Like all of the Bag Boy push carts, the Quad XL pushed straight and true requiring no alignment adjustments.

The Quad XL weighs 14.2 pounds is available in 7 color combinations, and retails for $220.

Compact 3 Push Cart

The Compact 3 is a very simple, no frills push cart from Bag Boy that still has everything you need in a very compact three wheel design.  The selling feature of this cart is the overall weight of 13.5 pounds.  After 18 holes of golf on a summer day, a few less pounds can go along way on uneven terrain.  The weight also lends itself to easy maneuverability in and out of the trunk as well.  Like the Nitron, the bag base also doubles as a nice carrying handle allowing for ease of transport.  I am not sure why but I really like this design feature.

The storage footprint of the Compact 3 is the most narrow and sleek taking up the least amount of space in the trunk comparatively.  Although the glove compartment is relatively similar to the Nitron and Quad XL, it lacks the under handle storage bag which I didn’t find to be a deal breaker.  With the bag in place and secured, the Compact 3 rolls as true and straight right out of the box.  Like the Nitron and Quad XL, the Compact 3 has foam maintenance free tires.

The Compact 3 and Quad XL have a three step breakdown protocol.  First, you unlock the handlebar assemble so the handlebars collapse.  Next, you pull the red release lever between the rear wheels which unlocks the folding mechanism.  Finally, you push it down into is storage position.  Unlike the Nitron, the Quad XL and Compact 3 have a nylon strap with velcro to secure the bag into place.  The Nitron utilized the bungee cord system to secure the bag.

The Compact 3 three comes in two color combinations and retails for $190.
