Buying Guide: The Best Divot Tools Explained
There are a few unique genres of most divot tools. Some are designed for a single purpose, and others are exploding with extra features to make your life easier on the golf course.
Fork - Two Prong Golf Divot Tools
These divot repair tools have two prongs sticking out of their usable ends, making it a little easier to repair your divots with fewer stabs and attempts than a single-prong tool. What is the best way to repair divots?
Here’s how we repair ball marks on the putting surface step by step:
Step 1: We find our ball mark and tamp it down with the bottom of our putter before we use our divot tool. This step flattens the surface and reduces our likelihood of damaging the turf when we begin step 2.
Step 2: We pull out our repair tool and insert it in the ground about a half inch away from the pitch mark at a 45° angle. Once inserted, we lightly push the handle of our tool toward the center of the divot.
Step 3: We repeat this process following the outer perimeter of the ball mark until its center is adequately fluffed back up.
Step 4: As a final step, we lightly tap down the area with the bottom of our putter head until it’s smooth and flush with the rest of the green. This final step lessens the chance of affecting another golfer’s line and helps the root system regenerate faster for better course conditions!
Where do you keep/carry a divot tool?
We carry our divot tool in the pocket of our pants or shorts, but many golfers keep their divot tool on their waist or in an outer pocket of their golf bag for easy access.
Is fixing divots in golf mandatory?
While it isn’t necessarily a written rule at every golf course that you MUST fix your divots, it is generally seen as a common courtesy that you’ll do this.
A “Golden Rule” we try to follow is, “Leave the golf course in better shape than you found it.” A great way to do this is by trying to fix a minimum of two divots per green you see.
