Our List:

Insights Into Our Best Wedges 2024 List:

My name is Ryan Heiman. I have been testing golf clubs and equipment here at Independent Golf Reviews since 2011.

Each year, the biggest brands in golf send me their newest wedge models to test and review on the course.

I test each wedge for multiple rounds and practice sessions before writing a full, in-depth review of them for our readers.

This is my current list of recommendations for the Best Wedges of 2024 based on certain categories of players.

Each golfer is different and will have different needs based on their game, but I try my best to accommodate every player.

You should be able to conclude this article with a clear choice about which wedges to buy.

Best Overall

Taylormade Milled Grind 4

Taylormade Milled Grind 4

Who Should Buy

  • Golfers wanting the best of the best wedges on the market
  • Players needing more consistency in all course conditions
  • Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy fans

Who Should Not Buy

  • On a strict budget or those needing added forgiveness

Thoughts

The TaylorMade Milled Grind 4s are the best wedges of the year, coming in at the #1 spot on our list.

Straight out of the wrapper, I noticed a little extra friction compared to competitors on their slightly oversized club faces.

This Spin Thread laser etching technology looks like a fingerprint between the grooves and adds extra grab and spin to all shots (particularly in wet conditions).

I tested them on a particularly soggy morning and immediately noticed more consistency in ball flight and bite on the greens than my gamers.

The Milled Grind 4s feel fantastic through the turf, spin like crazy, built more confidence in myself thanks to their bigger heads, and even offer a Tiger Woods-inspired sole grind to bring out our inner artiste.

If you’re looking for the best wedges 2024 has to offer, look no further than the TaylorMade Milled Grind 4s.

Best Budget

Takomo Skyforger

Takomo Skyforger

Who Should Buy

  • Golfers wanting to stay on budget with their wedges
  • Players unwilling to sacrifice quality for lower prices
  • Those who love golf club aesthetics

Who Should Not Buy

  • Those looking for ultimate customization/loft options

Thoughts

What if I told you that you could have premier-level wedges for half the price of competitors? That’s exactly what you receive in our best budget wedge pick: the Takomo Skyforgers.

Upon first look, you’ll likely be like me and think, “Wow. That’s a lot of club face.”

Takomo irons are known for their sleek and trim appearance, but the wedges feature a round, soft teardrop shape that immediately made me believe I would hit them purely.

Each wedge in the 4 loft options feels incredibly soft, but the higher lofted options have higher club head weight placement, promoting pillowy, soft landings with tons of spin.

The Takomo Skyforger wedges are the best value wedges you can find while still maintaining a premium level of quality.

Most Forgiving

Edison 2.0 Forged

Edison 2.0 Forged wedge

Who Should Buy

  • Golfers wanting premium, high-tech wedges
  • Those needing added forgiveness in their wedge game
  • Players who enjoy unique/artful wedges

Who Should Not Buy

  • Players seeking smaller, blade-type wedges

Thoughts

While testing the Edison 2.0 Forged wedges, I was shocked by their consistency across different turf types, controlled and predictable ball flights, and general uniqueness in the sometimes dull wedge world.

Unlike most competitors, the Edisons only offer one sole shape. This Koehler Sole is forgiving on the leading and trailing sides, making it adaptable to all lies and grass types.

The wedge’s loft options are unique, too—they are only available in odd loft degrees that can be bent to your desired number.

While not “game improvement wedges,” they feature a tiny cavity back specially designed to help my common toe-ball miss while still launching lower for predictable distances.

If you’re not a ‘Tour Level’ golfer and want a premium wedge option with added forgiveness and flair, the Edison 2.0s are a great pick.

Most Spin

Vokey SM10

Vokey SM10 wedge

Who Should Buy

  • Golfers looking for high-quality, spin-maximizing wedges
  • Players that love custom wedge fitting options
  • Those who trust Titleist’s R&D team (the largest in Golf)

Who Should Not Buy

  • Players on a strict budget or looking for maximum forgiveness

Thoughts

While I’m not a full-blown Titleist/Bob Vokey ‘fanboy,’ I can appreciate superior craftsmanship and attention to detail when I see it, and it’s clearly visible in the new Vokey SM10s.

When I got fit into my SM10s, I was immediately met with exponentially more greenside spin than I was used to.

As most golfers already know, “Vokeys” are some of the most customizable wedges on the market, and I tried all 6 grind options before letting the results choose the custom options for me.

Besides looking beautiful (as all Titleist/Vokey Wedges do), the wedges feature intelligent weight placement to lower trajectory and increase spin for added consistency.

Every few years, we’re blessed with another Vokey Spin Milled model, and I can confirm the SM10s are the spinniest wedges I’ve tested.

Editor's Choice

Wilson Staff Model ZM

Wilson Staff Model ZM

Who Should Buy

  • Players wanting ample spin
  • Those wanting a great, mid-priced forged wedge option
  • Golfers willing to try a less popular wedge brand

Who Should Not Buy

  • Those wanting maximum customization options

Thoughts

I determined the Wilson Staff Model ZM wedges are the most underrated wedges on the market for a few critical reasons:

  • They repeatedly spun over 10,000 RPMs on Flight Scope
  • They don’t overwhelm you with options but still have plenty of variety to choose from
  • They’re forged and soft feeling through contact
  • They’re affordable (not as low priced as Takomos, but still)

Arguably the coolest of all, specific lofts (56°, 60°, 64°) are offered in a High Toe head shape to create more room for creative shotmaking around the greens.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why more people aren’t talking about them or why more golfers aren’t playing them.

Regardless, I’ve tried almost every wedge under the sun, and can confirm they’re a must-consider for your golf bag.

Best Premium

JP Camber

Who Should Buy

  • Golfers willing to pay for premium quality and craftsmanship
  • Players wanting the ultimate wedge customization
  • Those who will try new wedge technology for better results

Who Should Not Buy

  • Golfers on a restrictive budget

Thoughts

Rounding out our list of the best wedges are the ultra-premium, incredibly hand-crafted JP Cambers.

From their general head shaping to their intricate finishes and endless stamping/paintfill customization options, these wedges will simultaneously turn playing-partner’s heads and help you play better inside 130 yards.

Each wedge in the lineup features JP’s signature Camber sole, which is specially designed to avoid sticking in the turf and provide smooth, crisp, and clean contact for more consistency.

On top of the game-improving sole, each wedge includes beefed-up perimeter weighting to encourage more precise sweet spot contact (and they really do feel easy to hit purely).

For a truly luxurious “custom wedge” experience, you have to try the JP Cambers.

What To Consider When Buying

If you are still trying to decide what to look for when finding the best wedges for your golf game, this is the section for you.

What Type of Wedge Player Are You?

Bob Vokey categorizes golfers into three types of wedge players:

Sweepers, Diggers, and Neutral Swingers.

You can find success in your wedge game regardless of what type of wedge player you are, but knowing what category you naturally fall under can help you choose your wedges more accurately.

  • Sweepers generally don’t leave a divot with their wedges and often struggle to get the ball airborne.
  • Diggers will often take deep divots, struggle in the wind, and need help controlling the height of their wedge shots.
  • Neutral Swingers will take a consistent-sized divot and are generally better naturally with their wedges.

Bob Vokey has developed an online Wedge Selector Tool that will diagnose your swing and help you quickly and easily find your best wedges.

What Head Shape Inspires the Most Confidence For You?

As you might already know, wedges are arguably the most important clubs in your golf bag.

We use them for over 50% of our shots on the golf course, so please make sure you feel inspired to hit great shots when looking down at your wedges before purchasing.

Some golfers like smaller, blade-style wedges that put a bigger premium on pure contact, while other players prefer larger club faces to trick their eye into making the ball look smaller.

For our readers’ convenience, our list includes club heads of every size and shape so you can find your perfect fit.
