I took the Callaway Apex Ai200 Irons to the golf course 6 times this fall to see what these Ai designed irons were all about.  It took me a few rounds to get settled in with them, but once I did, I realized that computers really know their stuff when it comes to players distance irons.  These irons combine feel, forgiveness, looks and a whole bunch of distance.

This is the definitive Callaway Apex Ai200 Irons Review for 2024.

Ai Club Design

Ai is taking over everything with computer “thinking and learning” what golfer need and how they swing.  However I was surprised that for the 1st round or 2 I had myself questioning artificial intelligence.  But suddenly everything clicked and I was able to fully appreciate what the Apex Ai200 Irons have to offer.  I felt like I had to learn these clubs rather than these clubs had learned what I need.  Which at the end of the day simply means don’t judge these clubs after a couple swings.  The Ai design offers amazing, feel, distance, forgiveness and performance, it just takes a little time to learn it.

Players Distance

The “players distance” category continues to grow with more and more clubs aimed at this segment.  These have a little more offset than some and a little more distance than others.  These are one of the longest players distance irons I’ve hit, yet still have a nice compact and clean look.  They are forged for great feel and have Ai driven forgiveness.  They are very easy to launch and stop fast on the greens.  I’ve been impressed by the pin hunting I’m able to accomplish with these irons in the bag.

Complete Set

Sometimes clubs seem to perform really well at one end or the other of the set.  But with these, the long irons are easy to hit, the mid irons find the green and the short irons get close to the flag.  I found really good distance gapping, even though they are really long.  I didn’t worry about overlap or running out of wedges; I could simply plan for the extra 5 yards and swing.  I had a few more shots go over the pin than usual, but still on the green.  The mid and long irons are very easy to hit and launch nicely.  I was impressed by how well they “hold the line” from 200-160 yards out.  The set can be built with an AW which is really nice for shorter shots too.  I only needed 2 additional wedges to complete the bag.

On-Course Performance

Golf is played on grass with real world conditions which is why I test all clubs over multiple rounds on the golf course.  If I had simply hit them on my simulator or at the range, I might have missed out on some really good performance features of these clubs.  Either these irons had to learn me or I had to learn them.  However, no matter which way that happened, I found clubs that work incredibly well off the turf.  They take small divots, while hitting the ball straight and long.  I could lift a ball out of pretty tall rough without much loss of distance.  I don’t work the ball much, but there were a few shots that demanded a little ball movement to attack the pin and I found that if you need a small draw or slight cut you can make that happen with these irons.  Ai created an all-around performance iron.

Summary

The Callaway Apex Ai200 Irons are pushing the limits of club performance with outstanding feel, forgiveness and distance.  They do it all with a nice looking, hidden tech, design.  While they didn’t win me over on the first hit, they learned me or I learned them which impressed how well they do just about everything on the course.  From top to bottom of the bag, these irons were easy to hit and were really long.  This is going to be one of the best sets for mid handicap golfers with the combination of features and performance.  Computers know their stuff; it just took me a little time to catch up while using this impressive set of irons.
