REVIEW: Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood

All of Callaway's Technologies in This 3-Wood
Flash Face, Jail Break, Opti-Fit Hosel, Adjustable Sole Weights; are all the technologies wrapped into a single club. While many of these technologies have been available in the driver, this is the first Callaway club that includes them all. If you go back a couple generations, you will find the individual technologies used in previous 3-woods, but all of them come together in 2019 for the newest version. All of these technologies make this their best 3-wood to date.
The 3-wood made a huge jump about 5 years ago when everyone was really upping their game.   3-woods had been kind of a forgotten club in terms of technology for years.  Now the 3-wood is expected to be just as technologically advanced as the driver, just a little shorter in order to fill the yardage gap at the top end of your bag.  Callaway has been producing some very good 3-woods and this one is their best yet.  When you pack so much technology into a this little head, the performance is outstanding.  The Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood isn’t a massive jump in performance, but a subtle improvement in consistency and performance.
The Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood is similar in looks to the driver line as well as previous models.  It is compact, thin and sits very nicely behind the ball.  The 2019 color palette is mostly black with hints of green and yellow.  One of the other upgrades I appreciated the most was the “stock” shaft.  The ProjectX HAZRDUS Smoke shaft is a better fit for my swing.  It is smooth, yet stout enough to offer strong launch and good control.  The Golf Pride MCC Align Grip also incorporates almost every grip technology there is too.  I really like this combo for looks, feel and performance.
The technologies in the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood abound.  The newest one is the Flash Face.  This is AI based technology designed to maximize the face thickness and design for the most consistent ball speeds possible.  As I found in the driver, I was impressed by the consistency off the face of the 3-wood.  My distance range shrunk over the course of 5 rounds.  My Arccos average distance had a smaller range of distance. When using Flightscope I used the dispersion circles to judge how consistent I am hitting a club and this one ranked up there as one of the best distance consistent clubs I’ve hit.  The Jail Break technology keeps the ball speed up about as high as I want a 3-wood to hit.
The Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood has the Opti-Fit Hosel and Adjustable weights to dial in your fit for pure distance or more forgiveness.  I think this really comes down to the golfer’s preference.  I’m not necessarily looking to squeeze out every last yard I can get from a 3-wood, I prefer the weight back for higher launch, straighter shots and better feel.  I already have hit this over numerous greens on par 5s and have hit it too far when trying to lay back from danger.  I want to hit fairways and an optimal distance for my game, but if i wanted to replace my driver, weight forward and bombs away off the tee.  If you don’t like driver, but don’t want to give up much distance, this is probably the best choice with the weight forward.

Callaway continues to dominate the wood category.  The Epic Flash Sub Zero 3-wood is one of the longest 3-woods you can buy, but yet offers lots of adjustablity and plenty of forgiveness for a “pro” style 3-wood.  AI technology of the Flash Face is real, and paired with the previous technologies makes for one amazing combo.  While 3-woods aren’t making the advances like they did 5 years ago, Callaway is still squeezing out some improvements with all their technologies.
