REVIEW: Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood

Speed Rewards Speed
Speed is the main source of distance.   The faster you swing, the faster the ball launches off the face.  The faster a face can transfer speed to the ball, the longer the ball will go.   However when we try to generate more speed through our swing, fundamentals break down and even though we were trying to gain distance, it comes at the cost of wayward shots and ultimately less distance.  The Epic Speed 3-wood however I found that the harder I swung the more I was rewarded.  Swing speed is rewarded with ball speed.  The technology in this club transfers maximum speed to the ball.
The Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood has AI redesigned jailbreak technology which connects the crown and sole to reduce the loss of energy.  This technology has been used now for a few generations of clubs to create maximum speed in fairway woods.  I continue to see great ball speed numbers off the face with a very high smash factor meaning swing speed is rewarded with ball speed.

The Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood also has forward weight which reduces launch and spin for a more penetrating flight as well as lower spin which will increase distance for many golfers.  Now not all golfers benefit from too low of spin or launch.  This certainly benefits the higher swing speed golfers.  But even lower swing speed golfers can get spinny so these feature do help as long as you are generating enough spin to keep the ball airborne.

The Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood rewards fast swings  and yet still offers some forgiveness across the face.  The cup face design along with the AI designed variable thickness means there is a little wiggle room on off-center strikes.  You aren’t going to lose much speed even if you don’t hit it on the screws.  For me however, I found easy swings resulted in inconsistent shots.  That may partially be due to an x-stiff shaft.  The PROJECT X HZRDUS SMOKE IM10 in a 6.5 (review) is right on the edge of my swing speed.  So I can certainly handle it when I swing hard, but less than a full swing, I wasn’t loading the shaft properly for best results.

With the Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood in the bag, I had some great looks at eagle, some really narrow fairways hit and some very consistent long shots with this club.  It certainly rewarded speed.  I hit some penetrating shots through the wind that impressively rolled out for some excellent distance.  I really liked how I could swing for the fences with this club with little fear.  I even went too long a couple shots with this club going over the green.  I wasn’t able to hit the 3/4 shot this club that some 3-woods I can.   While I don’t know how often I use that shot or how often anyone really tries to lay off a 3-wood, but this club likes speed.

The Callaway Epic Speed 3-wood rewards swing speed.  The harder I swung the straighter and longer it went.  While I know that might seem opposite of what you normally think, that is what worked with this 3-wood.  It has penetrating flight, lowish spin, and great feel.  I loved the distance I was seeing with this 3-wood and the ball speed numbers off the face.  It is an impressive club is you bring the speed.
