Callaway Opus Wedges Review

I’ve been able to generate some serious spin over the last 6 rounds with the Callaway Opus Wedges in the bag.

What actually impressed me the most was the new shape and feel of these wedges.

I tested them on the course, at the range and in the Office by Carl’s Place DIY Simulators.

The combination of on-course testing and FlightScope numbers proved that Callaway’s new Workhorse wedge can benefit your short game.

This is my definitive Callaway Opus Wedges Review.

Callaway Opus Wedge

Opus Weight vs. Jaws Ports

While the Callaway Opus Wedge has been hiding in plain sight on the PGA tour now for some time, their official release into the wild was just recently made available to the public.

For numerous generations of wedges, Callaway had port holes on the back of wedges.

It was about weight manipulation for CG control.

However I always felt that it made them sound and feel hollow right on the sweet spot.

Opus wedges went the other way and added weight right behind the sweet spot which makes them feel way better, but also benefits performance for me.

I found better launch and spin control with these wedges with the additional raised weight on the back of the wedge.

Spin Gen Face Technology

Callaway built this wedge around a new face technology called Spin Gen.

It is a combination of 3 details for generating spin: tighter pitch, offset groove in groove, and face blast.

These three work for every shot to generate the maximum spin on full or partial shots.

The spin is on full display every time you hit these wedges.

I’d put them as some of the spinniest wedges I’ve hit. (since the former days of box grooves)

The ball really wants to stop, even spin back at times.

I found the high spin on full shots sometimes to reduce distance by a couple yards.

If you like to watch the ball roll out across the green, these are not the wedges for you.

These are hop and stop no matter the shot type.

Options

When it comes to wedges you can guess that Callaway is going to give you as many options as you can imagine.

There are 3 finish options: chrome, black and raw(custom order only).

The loft and lie combinations should be able to get any combination and grind you need for the ideal wedge set up.

I went 50/10, 54/12, and 58/10.  This is their mid bounce combo which I’ve found is my ideal set-up in AZ.

The hard turf requires less bounce and these were a good balance of bounce for digging, but not too much for skipping off the harder turf.

The gapping fit my bag perfectly and the distance control was very consistent between each loft.

The high spin meant that yardages were a couple yards shorter, especially into the wind since there was never much roll out.

I think the brushed chrome looks really nice in the bag and held up very well to the abuse my wedges take.

Workhorse

The name Opus means “work” in Latin.

The Callaway Opus Wedges do all the heavy lifting around the greens.

I call them workhorses as they are the tools of recovery, pitch, chip, punch, flop and overall scoring.

While your score card doesn’t care how the shots look, it does reflect how close they get, more often in the putting stats.

The Callaway Opus Wedges have the ability to consistently hit the ball close to the hole.

There is a learning curve and some time to dial them in, but these workhorses might not get all the glory and praise like the putter will rolling in birdies, but their work of setting up easy putts won’t go unnoticed over time in your bag.

Summary

Callaway rebuilt their wedge line around the Opus design, weight and spin gen tech.

I really like the new headshaping and weight along with the increased spin.

You can get these in almost any configuration and grind you need while getting that perfect combo for your game.

Callaway took input from pros and amateurs in the creation of these wedges and designed a workhorse wedge with some serious spin.

CALLAWAY OPUS WEDGES – KEY POINTS
ℹ️ About Callaway rebuilt their wedge line in plain sight on Tour, but recently released the official Opus line for all golfers. With a wide range of grinds, lofts, and finishes, these workhorse wedges deliver exceptional feel, clean looks, and impressive spin.
✅ Pros Spin Gen Tech, solid feel, plenty of options, clean head shape, consistent results.
⛔ Cons Takes time to adjust to the increased spin.
⛳ Verdict Callaway’s new wedges are true short-game workhorses. With higher spin, improved weighting, and a confidence-inspiring head shape, you’ll see more up-and-downs and fewer putts. If you’re after serious spin and precision, the Opus line deserves a look.
