Every golfer needs a laser. It is a bold statement but even if you have GPS, you can’t tell how far out the group is in front of you, or where exactly that one tree is. Choosing the best laser is a daunting task. There are now hundreds of brands making laser rangefinders. I’ve tried a whole bunch of them over the years and while they all mostly work; I’d only trust my distances to a few brands.

The Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder is one of the best in the industry. The high quality optics, super fast distance calculations, durable body, lifetime warranty, easy to see display and finally a magnet make this one of the very best laser rangefinders you can buy. I tested it over 5 rounds of golf for accuracy and function. I’m impressed.

This is my definitive Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder Review.

Cobalt?

Hopefully this isn’t the first time you are hearing about Cobalt. They are one of the OGs when it comes to laser measuring devices, however most of those years were spent exclusively in the commercial side of distance measurement. However, the Q-6 came out 4 years ago and they have been making a name for themselves on amateur bags too. The Q-4 came out 2 years ago as a more compact, less powerful, and more affordable model. The Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder builds on their reputation of quality.

Slope Switch

The Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder’s hub of information is controlled by a switch, dial and button. It really is the easiest system of any laser to adjust what is being displayed and how it is being displayed. The slope on/off switch is easy to read, and even lights up when using slope so your playing partners know if you are USGA compliant or not. The yards/meter button makes it easy to toggle back and forth. The dial allows you to reduce or increase display brightness. However if it looks like the display is off when you try to use the laser, it could be the dial accidentally got turned all the way down.

Optics and Display

The Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder has 7x zoom which is great for getting locked onto the pin. The red LCD yardage is clear and down to the tenth of a yard. The slope is adjusted and only one yardage is displayed so there is no confusion. They do include the angle of rise or fall so you can make your own choice as to how you want to the play. I sometimes still like to see the line of sight distance compared to the slope so I will toggle the switch to know the distance between the two numbers. The eye piece is adjustable for your eyes to make what you see as clear as possible.

Finally A Magnet

The Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder finally added a magnet. They might be a little late to the party on this feature, but their high-strength N48-rated neodymium magnet means that this laser is locked to the cart. It didn’t matter the number or intensity of the bumps, this laser didn’t move on the cart arm. Combine that with a lifetime warranty, a durable aluminum housing on a magnesium chassis, and IXP7 waterproof; this thing is “bullet proof”. The magnet might seem like a minor feature, but it is pretty much required of a laser (especially in AZ). If I walked more, the non-magnetic version would still be fine on the bag or in a push cart basket.

Summary

If you want the highest quality laser you can buy, the Cobalt Q-6SM Laser Rangefinder is the best. The features, the warranty and the design are tops in the business. While they still might not be a household name, Cobalt knows lasers. The durable body, the clear optics, the easy to use controls, the long battery life, the lifetime warranty, the 7x zoom and now magnet give this laser everything a golfer needs on the course to quickly and accurately acquire distances. Now it is up to you to hit the shot, but no more excuses from your laser.
