Indoor Golf, Top Golf, and In-Home Simulator Golf have exploded over the past 5 years. Everywhere you go there is a hitting bay, an indoor golf facility, somewhere to play, practice and train whether it is up north or down south, hitting off artificial turf has become a fairly common way to practice. I installed the Carl’s Place DIY Golf Simulator in the IGR Office for club testing and training.

At first glance, it might seem like all turf is the same, but there are differences from one turf brand to another. The GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO is the first of its kind to offer a full grid pattern to help with set-up and alignment as well as 2 turf inserts for better ball striking. This mat can be used indoors or outdoors and will actually improve your training and swing.

This is my definitive GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO Review.

GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO

Teaching Mat vs Hitting Turf

There are all kinds of hitting turf available for purchase from a $19.99 square you can throw down anywhere to $1000s for full room coverage in a hitting bay. They all essentially do the same thing: recreate grass so that you can hit golf balls into a screen, net or range without damaging your clubs. A teaching mat is much more than just turf because it is actually designed to help you improve your alignment and swing. The GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO is the best teaching mat I’ve seen because it offers more lines, more grid, and more details for helping you improve.

This nylon turf mat is designed to be durable, forgiving, easy on the body and even has interchangeable inserts. It is a 5′ x 5′ mat which gives you plenty of space to stand and swing comfortably, plus can be spun around for right or left hand use. The big key to this mat is the multi-line grid which helps visualize exactly how our feet are aligned and also then how the club is aligned.

This mat isn’t just about hitting balls, but actually learning while you hit, play or have a lesson so that you can visualize what is happening on the ground and translate that to what is happening in the air with your ball. Sometimes it is as simple as not squaring up to the target which the GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO will clearly show on every shot. You can also visualize what you club is doing in relation to the lines.

The Inserts

The grid pattern of the GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO is 1/2 of the benefit of this teaching mat, the other 1/2 is the hitting inserts. While one is a flat “normal” insert with an aim line on it which again partners with the grid for making sure both body and ball are in alignment on shots. The other insert is another first of its kind which offers 3 benefits: downward striking iron swings, uphill shot or downhill shot practice. Plus if the inserts ever where out you can buy new ones for under $50 to restore your hitting area to new.

One of the keys to better ball striking is actually hitting down on the ball rather than up with your irons. The insert with a “hill” promotes hitting downward. It really works to both visualize that motion, but also to physically see it and feel it. Just be careful that this doesn’t suddenly great an over-the-top move to try and avoid the “hill”.

Uphill and downhill shot are hard to practice, but seem to happen regularly during a round of golf. You can set the insert uphill or downhill and practice those shot too. It isn’t perfect because your feet are still flat, but it still offers the benefit of learning the club reaction when swinging. It can be little challenging to get the ball to stay on the hill, but again, another unique feature that makes this teaching mat different.

Better Training and Practice

If you are a golf coach, the GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO might be one of the best investments you can make so that you don’t have to use alignment sticks on the ground, but can use the whole grid of this mat to get ball position and feet position all squared up when teaching. It is the best and most detailed option you can find. The two inserts give you the option to work on that downward iron swing for proper compression too.

If you just like to practice at home, this mat is the best training mat you can hit off of. When you see shots going sideways you can quickly learn if it was your feet, ball position or something in the swing. Because sometimes it is just a simple fix like aim or moving one foot an inch. It can be used indoors or outdoors too so even you don’t have a simulator, you can just swing outside into a net. (maybe you can convince your club to install these on their range for hitting mat only days)

Summary

The GIT Hybrid Golf Mat PRO is the best teaching mat you can buy because of the combination of grid, hitting inserts and high quality nylon turf. You can actually get better by using this mat regularly. The really cool feature of the grid is that it will lock into your memory so that even on the course you will imagine that the grid is there at set up when you get aligned to take a shot. I found that my alignment improved as did my visual cues for the swing felt more natural on the course. This mat will actually improve your training and swing.
