REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ Shaft

Drive it "Into the Zone"
It comes as no surprise the newest offering from Graphite Design has the signature bands near the grip. It should also come as no surprise that Graphite Design has engineered another amazing shaft in the Tour AD line up named IZ.  The IZ stands for “Into The Zone”, which I found very quickly to mean incredible feel, flight and distance.
It didn’t take more than an hour before I had an adaptor tip on this shaft and was ready to test. From the very first shot, I could tell this will be a very popular shaft in 2018.  In golf there will always be a constant search for the right combination of materials in producing the best shaft possible.  Graphite Design started making shafts with this philosophy and continues to incorporate the finest materials in the finest shafts. It sounds cliche, but the shaft in a golf club is like an engine in a car. You can make it look fancy on the outside, but the real story is told under the hood.  The new IZ shaft has a matte finish that is very sleek and a look that will impress, but under the wrapping is industry leading materials and technology.

The new Tour AD IZ utilizes the same TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology as the Tour AD TP shaft released early in 2017. This provides the tip section of the shaft with additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control. Along with TORAYCA ® and NANOALLOY ® is Graphite Design’s proprietary Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) design philosophy and technology. This means each material is used in construction to maximize the benefits of every shaft.   While I went with the 60 S flex, there are many different weights and flexes available in this shaft rarely seen before: The Tour AD IZ shafts are available in
40g R2, R1 and S flex;  50g R2, R1 and S flex; 50 gram X Flex, (for the first time); 60g SR, S and X flex; 70g S and X flex and 80g S and X flex.

The new Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft has a firm stiffness starting at the handle, and medium center section and a firm+ tip profile to promote a high launch angle and low ball spin rates. Testing was done with a Mizuno JPX 850 driver set at 8.5* of loft and 45 inches total playing length. Numbers used for the testing were gathered indoors on two separate sessions and the golf ball used was a Bridgestone B330. The Tour AD IZ shaft produced the best results I have ever recorded in shaft testing. Outdoors I noticed right away a ball flight that didn’t waver. I was also impressed with the feel.

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-6s Shaft

  • Spin: 2099 rpms
  • Launch Angle: 14.5*
  • Dispersion: 8.1 yds
  • Club Head Speed: 103.2 mph
  • Ball Speed: 146.5 mph
  • Total Distance:  280.5 yds
  • Carry Distance:  255.8 yds

I’ve never hit a Graphite Design shaft that didn’t feel great, but the Tour AD IZ was smooth in the swing and solid at impact. We are almost done with 2017, but Graphite Design has launched what I see as the shaft to get in 2018.
