JP Camber Wedge Review
Camber Is King

I’ve had some version of a JP Wedge in my “gamer” bag for years. Every model he has produced has evolved with creativity and performance. While the JP Premier Wedge can be customized to the hundredth of a gram, the JP Camber Wedge might just be his best wedge to date in terms of price, feel and performance. I gamed these over 7 rounds this summer to prove the on-course results are legit.
This is the definitive JP Camber Wedge Review for 2024.
The Camber Difference
James Patrick Harrington (known as JP) has been making wedges now for over two decades. The JP Camber Wedge is his newest design. Each version is built on his core beliefs combining Feel, Performance and Aesthetics. While previous models had the signature toe weights, the Camber is built around the “camber” sole while creatively milling the cavity so that the CG is still perfectly centered. The JP Camber sole creates a wedge that perfectly interacts with the turf so that golfers can maximize the performance around the greens. “Camber” is the rounding in 4 directions of the sole: leading edge to cavity and heel to toe. That rounding allows for maximum creativity along with ideal turf interaction. You want a wedge to take a little divot which is exactly what the Camber sole does. It might be hard to understand the difference until you hit one and immediately feel how uniquely pure it hits the ball off the turf.
One Piece Forged and Milled Wedge
JP has been an innovator in multi-material wedges. However, the JP Camber Wedge is a one-piece forged and milled wedge. The departure from using tungsten weights doesn’t detract from this wedge. It is one of the best feeling wedges you can hit; I actually think it might be more “solid” feeling than the others. Even though it has a “cavity” look to the back, the forged steel is soft at impact on every shot. The milling gives it consistency and aesthetics that are unparalleled. You simply can’t find a better looking or better feeling wedge. The other side benefit of this new construction method is that it reduces the cost. A new JP Camber Wedge is just a little bit more than an “off the rack” OEM wedge. They come in chrome, black or raw with custom paint fill options.
Consistently High Spin
While grooves are governed by the USGA rules and limits, that doesn’t mean all wedges spin the same. Sharp grooves and crisp contact will vary greatly from wedge to wedge. The JP Camber Wedge is one of the highest spinning wedges because of the consistent strike zone on the grooves. No “one groove too low” or “sliding up the face”, but Camber keeps turf interaction the same meaning you’ll get consistent spin too. If your wedge digs that mean your grooves are going to be too low; if your wedge bounces your grooves are going to be too high. Camber means your grooves will hit the center of the ball and spin it like a top. Not only are they high spin, they are spin consistent which is probably the most important quality for low scores. I like knowing how the ball will spin every time I hit a shot.
Short Game Performance
The closer to the hole you hit the ball with your wedge the easier it is on your putter and the lower your scores should be. I went with the mid-bounce model and they have done exactly that. My proximity to the hole with the JP Camber Wedges in the bag has been my best. Everything I’ve talked about above have been contributing factors. The final factor that has sealed the deal for me has been the bounce. I’d been fit by JP in the past into high bounce wedges due to my steep angle of attack and the typically soft turf I played on. However since moving to AZ my needs have changed and mid bounce wedges are absolutely perfect for the firm AZ turf. I can pick the ball right off the hard ground without the fear of skulling it. While soft fairways still don’t cause digging problems. Carefully consider your turf, your needs and your swing. While high bounce had served me well in the past; the mid bounce is better. These have been the best wedges I’ve ever put in my bag.

Summary
JP Golf now offers a wedge at a price point that is close to OEM wedge prices. If you go to one of the top 50 Club Champions for a fitting, you will be able to hit JP Camber Wedges for yourself. You will also find that the price point is very close to other brands. The outstanding performance, paired with the beautiful aesthetics means that you will have the best looking, feeling and performing wedge you can buy. The JP Camber Wedge is all about the signature camber sole which is the engine of this club. If you have better turf interaction, you have better contact, which means you get better spin, which ultimately means you get better results. Yes, I’ve been a fan and a friend of JP Wedges for over a decade, but side by side comparison, the Camber is the best combination of features and price he produced to date.
