Monster Mat 2.0 Review

Over the last 15 years, I’ve played golf on a simulator somewhat regularly.  In MN, my weekly round from Dec-March was indoors at a local facility.  In AZ, I installed the Carl’s Place DIY Golf Simulator in the IGR Office.  At first glance, it might seem like all turf is the same, but there are differences from one turf brand to another.  The Monster Mat 2.0 is made differently so that you can enjoy hitting off turf for a long time.

This is my definitive Monster Mat 2.0 Review.

Monster Mat 2.0

Polypropylene vs. Nylon

Bentgrass vs. Zoysia vs. Bluegrass vs. Bermuda vs. etc is all the talk we hear on real golf courses about their grass and grass quality.  So it comes as no surprise that when we hit off turf; there are different materials used to make the fake grass too.  Standard turf is going to be made out of nylon fibers that are directional.  Over time they tend to get crushed down by use.  They also tend to break and shed after 1000s of hits.  The Monster Mat 2.0 uses polypropylene fibers in their proprietary Z-Pro LSR Fiber turf which is non-directional and more realistic.  The ball sits up nicely, and the turf holds its body without matting or shedding.

Reducing Shock

One of the common problems with hitting off turf is hand and elbow pain because turf doesn’t divot or “give” the same way real grass does.  The Monster Mat 2.0 has a Premier Shock System that greatly reduces the wear and tear on your body while playing simulator golf.  This is huge for someone who hits a lot of shots while testing golf equipment indoors.  The combination of turf and turf backing along with long lasting performance means that you can hit 1000s of shots and avoid injury for a long time to come.

Good to Be Square

Being a “square” is an old expression of not being cool, but the 59″ by 59″ square Monster Mat 2.0 is actually a really good thing.  While I’ve had the Monster Mat 2.0 for some time and I don’t have a “wear” pattern in it yet, I don’t care what it is made out of or how durable it is; eventually it will get a wear pattern from my feet or my shots.  The benefits of a square mat mean I can turn it 90* for a different hitting and standing spot and I can do that 3 more times over the life of this mat.  The Z-Pro LSR Fiber, the Premier Shock System and the Square Design means this is the last mat you’ll ever need, even with extremely high traffic usage.

Summary

The Monster Mat 2.0 is one of the best hitting mats you can buy because of the fibers, shock absorbing backing and the square design.  Not all turf is the same and the Z-Pro LSR Fiber is legit as a non-directional and supportive surface that can be hit off of repeatedly without damage to the turf or your body.  I’m impressed with the closer to “real” turf experience when hitting off the Monster Mat 2.0.
