Wedges might be the most misunderstood club in the bag.

I’ve found that golfers don’t know much about wedges other than loft and brand. They are thrilled to have a certain brand in their favorite loft, but beyond that most golfers are completely clueless.

I know that if you are reading this you know far more about wedges than most. You know that grind, bounce, CG, etc. are all just as important for getting the best performance.

Let me introduce the PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges.

They offer tour like performance because of their optimized grinds, launch and spin.

While maybe this brand isn’t a household name; you’ve maybe seen them in tour bags. Tour players game these wedges with great success, but amateur golfers can also benefit from the optimized design to get tour like performance.

Let’s talk about the design and why it will help your short game. I tested these wedges over 10 rounds of golf as well as in the iGR Carls Place DIY Simulator with FlightScope Mevo+ Pro Launch Monitor.

PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges

Forged Wedges

Forged clubs remain the king of feel.

There is simply nothing better than a well struck forged wedge that flies high and sticks right next to the pin.

PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges are some of the finest forgings you can play.

They come out of Japan and offer exceptional feel.

It isn’t only the forging, but also the design that has a 3 stepped back which placed the CG in an optimal position for feel.

These wedges have a precession about their creation and production that offers a consistently solid feel.

The S20C Forged carbon steel offers one of the softest feels your can buy.

3 Grinds

Matching the sole grind to your needs is in my opinion the most important aspect of wedge fitting.

The moment of impact is impacted by the sole of the club’s interaction with the ground.

The PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges make it easy with 3 grinds: NT (Neutral), SP (Sweeper), AG (Aggressive).

These sole grinds match your swing and pair with a bounce angle that controls your leading edge based on turf conditions.

The NT grind is balanced for all turf conditions and are used in the “gap” wedge lofts.

You can get all three grinds in a “sand” wedge lofts and the “lob” wedge lofts are SP or AG grinds.

I play on hard conditions here in AZ so I went 50NT, 54NT and 58AG.

These grinds allowed me to have ideal turf interaction on each shot, which leads to better ball contact and spin.

This is too often overlooked by amateur golfers, but shouldn’t be.

The 58AG is versatile from any lie for any shot. I like the fact that I can really attack the ball without fear of bouncing the leading edge into it.

It is aggressive, but even on soft turf it wasn’t too sharp.

If you play on soft turf all the time, then the SP grind is probably perfect in the sand and lob wedge loft.

Optimized Spin and Launch

MAX spin isn’t everything. I’ve tested wedges that not matter the loft or grind they simply had too much spin and I couldn’t get proper gapping nor could I keep a ball on the green.

Optimizing spin is much more than just super aggressive grooves and so much spin it is uncontrollable.

The PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges have ideal spin and launch that increases progressively as you go up in loft.

While that is natural, it is controlled along the way so that you can hit the most consistent performing shots with each wedge.

The CG design paired with the grooves give you the same strong stopping power in each wedge.

These wedges allow you to attack the pin with consistency so that you know your ball will stick and stay.

I liked the consistent spin even on 1/2 shots with the 58AG wedge so that I could control short shots to get a little roll or minimal roll depending on the shot I was trying to hit.

This optimization doesn’t just benefit tour players, but amateurs will see consistency with these wedges too.

The pairing of spin and launch are important for all golfers to get their yardages and keep the finishing point of the ball where they want it: close to the pin.

On-Course Performance

The PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges were put to the test immediately after they arrived.

I gamed them on-course for 8 rounds of my Nebraska golf trip which meant new clubs on new courses.

I found that they immediately gave me the results I’m looking for in my wedges.

They hit consistent distances on every shot. I found that 10 yard gapping between wedges flowed nicely with my irons.

I was able to control the launch so that even in windy conditions I could attack pins.

I had a chip-in and a whole bunch of tap-ins while playing these wedges.

It looks like they might be staying in the bag based on the performance I’ve had with them.

Summary

The PROTOCONCEPT RR Forged Wedges are not just for tour professionals but they actually give amateurs tour like performance.

The optimization of these clubs offers consistent spin, outstanding feel, nice launch, outstanding turf interaction and close to the pin results.

While these might sound like a “pro only” kind of wedge, I can tell you that they can improve your shot game.

They have stock and custom options for ordering them to fit your preferences. (I even got “tour” stamping on mine)

These may not be a familiar brand, but you should get to know PROTOCONCEPT because of the performance optimization these wedges offer.
