PXG Desert Club Review
If You Golf In AZ Then You Need Club

The new PXG Desert Club found a permanent slot in my golf bag. I’ve used it for 6 rounds so far and it isn’t going anywhere. Since moving to AZ, I’ve had some version of a “desert club” in my bag. Usually a random demo 8 iron or some other club that I could beat up and not care. PXG designed a club specifically for escaping bad lies without damaging your irons.
This is the definitive PXG Desert Club Review for 2024.
AZ Necessity
Imagine bombing a drive that just bounces 1 foot off the fairway. You only have 120 yards into the green, but it is sitting in the desert. Do you really want to hit your forged PW off the rocky soil, potientially putting a huge gouge in the metal? Unfortunately no matter good of golfer you are this is going to happen in AZ when playing desert golf. Most courses don’t have much for rough, other than natural desert scrub. Since most AZ golfers already had some version of this, PXG leaned into it and created a specific Desert Club.
Brilliant Design
The PXG Desert Club is more than just spare parts sitting around with a cactus stamped on it, but a brilliantly designed rescue club. The loft is 44* similar to many PW, and the shaft is 36.5″ long similar to many 8-irons. This makes it incredibly versatile for escape shots from about 140 yards and in. The non-plated 17-4 hardened stainless steel means it is going to be durable in the harsh desert conditions. Yes is still going to get some nicks and dings, but far fewer than your forged irons. The cambered sole works great from any lie, and the cavity back is really forgiving. It has low weight for easy launch.
Play It As It Lies
Do you really want to take a penalty when you have a clear shot at the green, but just happened to be sitting in the desert? Is it right to foot wedge it back to the grass without a penalty when it finished in the desert? Playing it as it lies is part of the gentleman’s game we call golf. Sometimes the bad bounces happen after good shots. The PXG Desert Club is a mush have for AZ golfers, but other states nasty rough that clubs. Will it be your 14th or 15th club. I’m not going to worry if my playing partner has 15 clubs in the bag and one is the PXG Desert Club, but if your buddies are strict, then drop a wedge or long iron and get this club to save your forged irons and wedges from dings and nicks. You can now play every shot as it lies.
Summary
AZ golfers are already familiar with the concept of a desert club/rock iron; PXG created the perfect version of it with their Desert Club. The combination of materials and design make it a brilliant option to play every shot as it lies. The PXG Desert Club has a permanent spot in my bag. I love how it can save the day when shots take unfortunate bounces into the desert.
