Ryp Golf ButterBlade Training Aid Review
Aim Small. Miss Small
Ball striking is the key to success on the golf course.
Hitting pure shot after pure shot will help every aspect of your game.
The phrase “Aim small, Miss small” is all about good ball striking.
The Ryp Golf ButterBlade forces you to practice that motto with a tiny clubhead that only allow you to hit small.
I used the ButterBlade at the outdoor range to warm up for 2 rounds of golf and in the IGR Office by Carl’s Place DIY Simulators as part of my morning training routine.
The results are really straight forward with this training aid, Aim Small, Hit Small works.

Tiny Club Head
The term “ButterBlade” combines the expression “butter knife” and “blade”.
Both of which golfers use to describe a small club head that has often been thought of as hard to hit: “That club is so thin it is a butter knife.” or “You’re not good enough to hit those blades.”
Ryp Golf created a 7-iron that has a tiny club head so that golfers would focus on center of the face contact in order to improve their ball striking called the ButterBlade.
As you can see in the picture it is 1/2 the size of a regular 7-iron.
The “sweet spot” is tiny by comparison.
You can order it RH or LH with the proper flex shaft.
It is a really simple training aid that you can hit balls with, but does it work??

Simple Drills
The Ryp Golf ButterBlade Training Aid uses the most simple drills of any training aid: hit balls.
While it might seem simple, it takes extra focus, concentration and skill to master the ButterBlade.
Even the slightest variation in your swing in, out, up or down means you are probably going to shank it.
There is such little margin for error which is exactly that plan: Aim Small, Hit Small.
Their suggestion is 20-30 golf balls with the ButterBlade and then using your regular club for another 20-30 balls.
I’d say most often I hit a few less than that, but really made sure to focus on impact.
Sometimes trying to figure out why I was shanking it was another aspect to discover.
What is set-up, mechanics, or path?
You have to self-diagnose or use video to see what is going wrong if you miss hit this club.
However, the simplicity of it is genius: focus on a small target and hit balls.

Feedback and Results
The ButterBlade offers visual and impact feedback on each swing.
It is easy to see and feel what is happening.
When you hit it pure you know immediately as well as when you send one sideways.
I already play “blade” irons as my gamers so I like the aim small, miss small motto.
I did however find an improvement to my ball striking the more I practiced with this club.
I couldn’t find any drawback of using this club to warm up, practice or simply hit balls with more focus.
The results translate to the golf course with less shanks and misses.
However it still takes time and practice to make it a long term habit.
The success comes because the focus is on the moment of impact, not any other mechanics which means swing how you swing, just make sure that club head is at the right spot at the right time in the swing.

Summary
The Ryp Golf ButterBlade Training Aid is both simple and effective.
You aim small and miss small with this tiny club head training aid.
I found an immediate improvement to my ball striking and plan to continue hitting shots with it to keep getting better.
If you are warming up before your round or hitting the range for a training session, I think the ButterBlade is a great tool to improve your ball striking which will lead to better scores.
