REVIEW: SkyCaddie LX5 Watch
The SkyCaddie LX5 GPS watch offers the best screen I’ve seen on a golf GPS watch. The brightness, the clarity and the touch sensitive functions are all at the top of their game. It finally is a screen that can compete. Obviously brightness is a big key when playing golf in AZ. The sun is bright and the screen needs to be bold and bright to contrast. The face is fairly big too, which is also necessary if you want to show the entire hole or map a green. The style is classic and high end, especially with the ceramic bezel. It comes with 2 watch bands which are different sizes so that you aren’t on the last hole of the band either long or short, but can get a good fit around your wrist with some room for adjustment. There are a couple buttons on the side to access menus and functions of the watch. The screen will wake up with a touch or tap also. It uses a 4 point magnetic charging strip that connects to any micro USB cord.
The SkyCaddie LX5 GPS watch needs to be registered and logged into so that you can get the courses you want and set up for play. It doesn’t take long but you can’t open the box at the course and expect it ready to go. SkyGolf does have a subscription service so there might be some cost down the road, but with technology changing so quickly, you might be on to your next SkyCaddie watch by then. But once you’ve registered and downloaded your courses, you can charge it and go. I found 36 holes didn’t wear the battery out, but leaving it on after the round killed the battery quickly. It will auto-advance on each hole and it allows you to keep score as well. Most of the features are easily accessible through the touchscreen. The side buttons aren’t labeled but the top is power and the bottom is menu which is good to remember.
The SkyCaddie LX5 GPS watch has enough other features that you might consider wearing it as your everyday watch. It has a heart rate monitor and step counter so that you can track your fitness both on or off the course. The battery life isn’t days, but it will get you through a normal day off the course or a long 36 hole day on the course. It connects via Bluetooth or WiFi which is also a really nice bonus so that it doesn’t have to be on your phone, but can be via WiFi access points too.
The SkyCaddie LX5 GPS Watch is finally a golf GPS watch that has a screen equal to smart watches. The Ceramic bezel is a really nice touch for style. SkyGolf has the best golf mapping system on the market. While I’d love to see them do away with the subscription, it does come with 3 years which is pretty long with the ever changing technology. The LX5 watch has enough health features that you can wear it every day on or off the course. If you are looking for a great screen and accurate distances, the SkyCaddie LX5 should be your top choice.
