I played golf for 5 rounds with the Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag in use. It is a full featured lightweight cart bag from the industry leader Sun Mountain. It is an ideal bag for golfers that mostly use riding carts. The combination of a 14 way top, front facing pockets, hidden features and lightweight make it an excellent upgrade.
This is the my Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag Review for 2022.
The name “Maverick” automatically makes me think “Top Gun”. It was one of my favorite movies back in the day, and with the recent sequel, the name “Maverick” is once again on people’s minds. While the meaning is unorthodox or independent of other people’s views; the name is fitting for a lightweight cart bag. There really isn’t a need for a cart bag to be lightweight. I’ve never worried about any extra weight on a power cart. However the Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag really is a “Top Gun” of cart bags because the form and function are as good as anything out there with the bonus of being lightweight.
The Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag comes in 7 color options. The Black Camo is stealthy cool. It is subtle so that it doesn’t draw everyone’s eyes to it, but yet stylish enough for fellow golfers to mention how cool this bag looks. This color combo fits the “Maverick” name too. Weighing in around 5 1/2 lbs it is going to make moving your clubs from the trunk to the cart easier. While 2lbs might not seem like much, when you have that awkward lift from your trunk/hatch/truck bed, any weight reduction is nice on the back. (It also means don’t fill the pockets with hundreds of golf balls)
Just because the Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag is lightweight doesn’t mean it is light on features. For me, the best feature is the 14 way full length divided top. I am a firm believer in 14 way tops. I like having a slot for every club and keeping the grips separated down at the bottom too. The large putter well makes it usable for any “oversized” grip you might be using. The other ones are square and hold every club from driver to lob wedge nicely in its place with only minimal chatter while cruising around the course. The molded plastic handles that from the top also make lifting and moving the bag easy, and offers some added protections from your cart partners gear.
Pockets, pockets and more pockets all face the front of the Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag. It has 11 different pockets which can carry every accessories and golf gear you could ever want on the course. The 4 “spine” pockets are great for the most used accessories like ball marker, rangefinder, divot tool and balls. They are large and easily accessible. The zipper pulls have straps on them which makes it easy to grab and pull to open or close each pocket. The top pocket is angled nicely for the easiest access. The side velour lined pockets are great for phones, keys, wallet and “birdie juice”. The right side has a full length pocket which is perfect for rain gear and/or shoes. The left side has an upper pocket which is perfect for even more golf balls while the lower pocket will hold some cold beverages for the round.
The Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag has some “hidden” features which make it extra durable and functional on a cart. The pass through strap pockets make it sturdy on the cart without crushing the top of the bag. The straps go through the side pockets as well as the spine pocket so you can be rider or passengers and have you bag well secured to the cart. Even if you hit big bumps the bag can’t slide off. The rubber bumper pads on back of the bag also protect it from “cart rub” against the basket. They also serve as stabilizers so that bag doesn’t move or twist on the back of the cart. It also has a couple loops and clips for things like a towel, rangefinder, umbrella, water bottle, etc. that can be attached to the outside of the bag.
Summary
The Sun Mountain Maverick Cart Bag really is one of the best cart bags on the market. The combination of full function and lightweight make it an ideal choice for the riding golfer. The 7 color options should allow every golfer to find a fit for their style. There are bigger, fancier and custom cart bags out there, but this combination really is a “Top Gun” with everything this bag offers. If it is time to upgrade your golf bag, the Maverick is an excellent choice for the riding golfer.
