How do you fill the gap between your 3-wood and your longest iron? It has been debated online now for years between high lofted fairway woods, hybrids or long irons. I think each option has it benefits while there are drawbacks to each. I think depending on the conditions and courses that you play will impact your decision. Also, what club you hit the most confidently will also play a part into how you fill the top end of your bag.

The Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility is a long iron/hybrid alternative that has the looks and qualities of an iron, but was designed to perform like a hybrid. This club isn’t for everyone, but if you already hit your long irons well, this is the perfect choice to fill a distance gap beyond your longest iron to pick up some yards, but still have the look and precision of a long iron. I played it on the course for 6 rounds and tested it in the iGR Office by Carl’s Place Simulator.

This is my definitive Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility Review.

Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility

Iron Inspired Shape

The Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility blends together 3 club styles (iron, hybrid and wood) into one tour-inspired club. It offers golfer the best of all 3 technologies. It is compact enough to look like an iron, but powerful like hybrids and woods. The top line is fairly thin, similar to a long iron, just a touch thicker than the Tour Edge CB 4-iron. The “muscle” of the club is visible at address with the wide sole and deep “beef” of the hollow-body club. I think it still inspired confidence with long iron players.

The looks of the club are cool with the welded like look separating the muscle from the cavity. It comes in a black finish or silver finish. The titanium face looks like any other iron at address. The off-set is just enough for a 2,3 or 4-iron replacement.

Hybrid/Wood Construction

Tour Edge created the Exotics line around the materials and construction. The Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility is no different with a combo-brazing Beta Titanium L Cup Face means the face is like a wood, but the hollow body, deep back, wide sole is almost like a hybrid and the top line and rest of the body is all iron. This is really for the golf that wants to play a long iron, but wants more performance out of it. They pair the iron like head with a graphite hybrid shaft: Ventus Blue/Black 85s was the ideal shaft for my swing and needs.

Ti-Utility Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility is not for everyone, it is for a specific golfer looking for a long iron that is easy to hit, goes far and can be flighted to fit the conditions. It still looks like a 3-iron but is certainly more forgiving than any regular 3-iron. I found that my miss was hitting this club just a touch thick off the turf. However off the tee this thing is a fairway finder. It might just be the straightest long iron, hybrid, fairway wood I’ve ever hit.

Off the turf it may not be as forgiving as a hybrid or fairway wood, but certainly offer more options if you get dialed in with this club. It is more like a iron that can be shaped and manipulated. If you want to hit a low runner for firm conditions you can, if you want to hit a high draw you can. It really offers iron like precision while still having some serious “pop”. I found distance to be really good, with low spin.

Tour Edge Exotics 3-Wood Data

Data from Flightscope MEVO Gen2 Launch Monitor

➜ Spin: 4128 rpms

➜ Launch Angle: 17.2*

➜ Dispersion: 4.4 yds

➜ Club Head Speed: 99.1 mph

➜ Ball Speed: 140.3 mph

➜ Total Distance: 218.8 yds

➜ Carry Distance: 205.7 yds

Summary

The Tour Edge Exotics Ti-Utility is tour inspired, constructed like a wood, but looks like a long iron. It fit a specific segment of the golfing population that love their irons, but want something longer. Good swings are rewarded with control, accuracy and distance. While forgiving for a long iron, still more demanding compared to a fairway wood or hybrid, but good shots can be more rewarding. I think the appeal of this club is for better golfers who want to hit specific shots with their long irons without being penalized by the lower loft and harder to hit head.
