Review: Wilson Staff FG Tour FG5 3-wood

Sleeper Pick in the 2016 3-wood Class.
There are some clubs that make a big splash onto the market. This happens with a PGA tour win, a huge ad campaign, or some sort innovation that shocks the golfing world. Then there are those clubs that fly slightly under the radar, don’t maybe get as much press as they deserve and don’t win a major, but are really good clubs. The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 3-wood is that sleep pick in the 2016 class of 3-woods.
I was impressed with the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver.   I really feel like Wilson is churning out some great clubs right now.  Their FG irons have been great now for a couple seasons and their woods are catching up.  The 3-wood is a very good performing 3-wood.  With the lower and forward weight on the sole to move the CG they have a very easy launching, but strong flighted 3-wood.
Wilson has been killing it in terms of looks recently.  The Staff FG Tour F5 lines looks as good as anything.  The 3-wood shape is a very traditional kind of pear shaped head.  It has a moderate face height and good overall size.  It fits into that nice category where the face is thin enough to get the ball, but not so thin you are afraid you’ll go under the ball in the rough.  The black crown and face pair nicely together and the very muted smoke alignment aid is just there enough to see if you want it, but almost hidden if you don’t.  The sole looks like it has different weighting zones and then an interchangeable sole weight near the face of the club.  It also has an adjustable hosel in case you want the face open or closed looking at address.  It also comes with a great stock headcover, kind of leather style.

On-course, this club was a surprise because I was expecting a higher hitting, spinnier 3-wood.  Instead I got a quick, but strong launching 3-wood that has relatively low spin.  The ball comes off the face like a canon.  It does have a slightly hollow sound because of the size of the head and the forward weight.  But the crack is very pleasant to the ear.   The strong launch held its line very nicely and had a good roll out after landing.  It was right up there where I want it to be distance wise.  I found it really nice off the tee into some long par 3s.

The biggest shocker for me was that the Fubuki shaft in this 3-wood worked really well.  That was my only issue with the driver, but with the 3-wood it felt good and was very accurate.  I didn’t get any of those high rights like I did with the driver.  The Fubuki line of shafts have always felt good, but haven’t always worked the best for my swing, but this one is very solid.

Hot If you are looking for a really solid club that might not be getting all the fan-fair of other clubs, this is your sleeper pick for 2016.  It is very solid all around.  The performance is right up there with the best of them, the size is a little bigger so if you like that for confidence this will be a good fit for your game.  It has a strong launch, good spin numbers, solid distance and fairly tight dispersion.  Check out the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 line for 2016.  It is really solid from top to bottom and the 3-wood might be the real sleeper in the bunch.
