REVIEW: Tour Edge Exotics CBX 3-wood

Lower Spin and Raise Distance
Golf in many ways is just a math equation.  There are certain factors that can make the ball go further.  Obviously more swing speed will do the trick, but what if you simply can’t swing any faster, how do you get more distance?   While not all clubs have maxed COR, most are close to it.  One way that creates more distance is more ideal launch numbers.  If you can get the absolute  most out of your swing with ideal numbers you can probably gain some distance.  The Tour Edge Exotics CBX woods are designed for the better players who can generate plenty of speed and lift, but want to lower their spin.  These woods will lower your spin and have great potential for raising your distance.
Tour Edge has made a living on making great fairway woods.  I’ve had numerous popular ones in my bag over the years.  The CBX falls right in line with that great tradition.  It is a titanium cup-faced 3-wood with carbon fiber and what they call a speed ramp sole which looks like rails for minimal turf drag.  Also like most drivers, it has variable face thickness  for more forgiveness across the face and less loss of ball speed.  It is a three wood with many design features found in drivers.

The Tour Edge Exotic CBX has a great shape as it sits behind the ball.  The face is fairly rectangular and the rounded body offers good confidence.  They have a number of stock shaft options that are excellent, I went with the ProjectX HZRDUS Black 75 gram shaft.  It is one of my favorite shafts and works really well with my aggressive 3-wood swing.  It too is low spin so adding this to a the low spin head really cut down my 3-wood spin numbers.

Getting the Tour Edge Exotics CBX on the course in the AZ winter is perfect timing.  We have the great combo of weather and course conditions as they are all in their prime right now.  I took a few swipes on the range and wow, this club is a cannon.  On the course, I hit it on holes that driver was too long, thankfully this 3-wood is just barely shorter than my driver, but not by much because it almost got me in trouble too because of length.  On a couple different par 5s I was able to reach in 2 with this 3-wood in the bag.  What is really great to see with this club is a very strong ball flight, with tons of roll.  The ball hits the ground and chases out for a long ways.  I also liked that it hits rather straight, which again is attributed to lower overall spin.

The Tour Edge Exotics CBX is a great fit for my bag, but lower spin might not be for everyone.  Often times slower swing speeds need spin for lift,  If you don’t naturally launch the ball, this club could lower your spin too much.  This club is really aimed at the stronger, better, and higher spin player.  I saw  really good numbers on the FlightScope Xi Tour launch monitor with this club.  The titanium face, multi material design and ProjectX HZRDUS shaft really make this a low spin bomber.

If you want to lower your 3-wood spin and raise your distance with a strong 3-wood swing, this is a perfect club for you.  It might not be for everyone, but it can bomb the ball by lowering spin and raising distance.  Tour Edge continues to pump out great 3-woods and this is just another evolution of their great fairway woods.
