Golf and Watches?

This past month, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the watch micro brand, Nodus.  Timepieces have always been a part of the game of golf.  From the golf course pole clocks to sponsorships and even ambassadorships, watch brands are often a symbol luxury and the country club lifestyle.  However, not every golfer plays at a country club nor can they afford the prices of luxury timepieces.  Just like a public golf course, there are some very good alternatives at very affordable prices.  Nodus is one of them and I had the chance to wear the Sector Sport on the wrist for about a month.  Here are my thoughts.

Micro Brand

What is a micro brand? The respected watch aficionado, Teddy Baldassarre, defines a micro brand as a “smaller upstart brand without in-house manufacturing or proprietary capabilities often run by one person or a small team.”  What that means is that the micro brand will have to source all of the parts such as the movement, case, bracelet, dial, etc., and then have them assembled into a watch for the brand. Nodus is a micro brand committed to creating the best luxury watch.

The Nodus Story

The origin story for Nodus began in 2016 when two friends, Wesley Kwok and Cullen Chen, who met in Beijing, found themselves in Los Angeles wanting to design a watch for themselves.  They quickly discovered that you can’t just design and build two watches, you have to order 500 of them.  Just like that, Nodus was born.  Eight years later, they have had a consistent and solid portfolio of designs and offerings for watch enthusiasts.

Sector Sport

The Nodus Sector Sport Watch has hints of being an explorer watch but with a twist all of its own.  The case is constructed of 316L surgical grade stainless steel with a width of 38mm.  The Sector Sport has a screw down crown with 100 meters of water resistance. The glass is a flat-top sapphire crystal with a blue anti-reflective coating on the underside.  The bezel is fixed and the hour markers are embedded with Swiss Super-LumiNova.  The bracelet contains a proprietary NodeX Clasp.  This is basically a micro adjustment that can be manipulated by hand so as your wrist expands and contracts with body temperature variances you can make adjustments to the tightness in seconds.  This technology so well thought out that it is being licensed by other companies.  Finally, the movement is a Seiko Caliber TMI NH 38 (Japan) with 41 hours of power reserve as well as antimagnetic properties.

Beautiful Design

The sunburst glacial dial on the Nodus Sector Sport Watch is absolutely stunning and is the most beautiful version of a “Tiffany” blue that I have ever seen on a watch.  The color is perfect in every way with the sunburst ray effect highlighted with every movement of the wrist.  The hour markers contain the numerals 3, 6, 9 with double bar indices at the 12 position, and single bars for the remaining hours. The subtle second indices are located on the sidewalls of the dial.  The result is a well-designed, clear, easy to read dial that is free of complications and sits on a beautiful glacial blue backdrop.

Summary

On the wrist for a month now, the Nodus Sector Sport Watch has proven to be an exceptional all around sport watch.  With 100m of water resistance, this is a go anywhere, do anything watch. At a width of 38mm, it is the perfect size on my wrist and glides nicely under a shirt sleeve.  The design of the of the stainless steel case and bracelet are functional yet simple so your attention is immediately drawn to the dial.  Although it might seem cliché to call this an all-around, go to, everyday sports watch but that is exactly what the Nodus Sport is.  I found myself reaching for this and gravitating toward it because it can be worn with anything and is adaptive to any activity.  The versatility and dept of this watch combined with its inherent simplicity is a grab and go for any occasion.  It is a well-built reliable watch with a workhorse movement.  I believe this compares to offerings such as the Tissot Gentleman, Longines Conquest, and Rolex Oyster Perpetual at a fraction of the price.  If you are in the market for those offerings, you would be remiss not to give the Nodus Sector Sport Watch a look if you are looking for a well-constructed value proposition.
