Vacation in Los Cabos

At “Lands End” of the Baja Peninsula is the bustling resort region of Los Cabos.  It claims around 20 golf courses and numerous resorts.  It is an easy flight from from the US and offers water adventures on both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.  It is a very safe destination and has amazing year round weather.  Construction is booming at seemingly every resort so finding accommodations that fit your needs is easy.  Our travels took us to Pueblo Bonito Resort which encompasses multiple lodging options and Quivira Golf Club.  This resort represents some of the finest of everything in Los Cabos.  It is a luxurious all-inclusive resort which boasts one of the finest and most unique golf course in the world.  You can make a vacation here relaxing and luxurious as well as fun and adventurous.  It offers something for everyone, especially the golfer.

1. Quivira Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus designed one of the most unique golf courses in the world at a spectacular setting on the Pacific Ocean.  Quivira Golf Club rises and falls along the coast and weaves inland among massive dunes.  It has been softened a touch since the opening and recently was rerouted to make a more even front 9 vs back 9.  This was also done to accommodate more resorts.  Now the par 35/37 routing starts by teeing off toward the ocean before working inland for a few holes.  The real adventure begins on the long drive up the side of the cliff to hole 6.  But before you play the most beautiful and frustrating hole on the course, enjoy food and drinks while watching whales breach in the ocean.  The next 8 holes weave you around the cliff, an old lighthouse, another full service comfort station for lunch as well as huge dunes and more ocean views. The closing holes bring you back down cliffs to the ocean side club house.

2. Unique Golf Experience

Normally I would complain about a 4:45 round of golf, but not at Quivira.  It is part of the experience and hospitality of the resort.  There is no rush to fly around the course and make record time.  Instead take your time, soak in the views and enjoy a margarita or two or three or more.  There is a full service bar by the range to start your round, there is a ocean view comfort station on hole 6 serving kabobs, sliders, tacos or quesadilla (depending on the day) along with drinks of choice.  After hole 9 sit down and eat lunch.  Tacos, Burgers, Sandwiches, etc are made to order when you sit down.  Enjoy a specialty drink of the day or your personal favorite.  Before you tee off on 17 you can grab one more snack and drink to finish strong.  Everything is designed to make your round a truly memorable and enjoyable experience.

3. Most Beautiful Driving Range

Quivira Golf Club has the most beautiful driving range in the world.  The range runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean and sits on sandy dunes looking toward Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort.  The tightly manicured range is huge and is moved every day ensuring a perfect hitting surface for every guest.  There is not better place to work on your game with plenty of chipping and putting space too.  The rhythm of the ocean waves crashing against the beach are incredibly relaxing as you hit balls.  Give yourself plenty of time before and/or after your round to enjoy hitting golf balls at the most beautiful range in the world.

4. Pacifica

From the moment you arrive at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort you sense the tranquil, modern, water-infused, beautiful design transporting you away from your busy life to a peaceful vacation.  Pacifica is an adult only all inclusive resort which makes it an ideal get away for couples looking to relax and reconnect.  Everything is right at your fingertips your entire stay.  All the rooms over look the central pools, Siempre Restaurant and the ocean.  Everything is accessible by a short walk to grab a drink, get some food, enjoy the spa, lounge by the pool, or soak in the sun by the ocean.  The ocean is too dangerous to swim with its strong undertow, but enjoying the sounds and sights of the waves takes the stress away.  While looking out over the ocean, there is a chance of seeing whales during the winter months of the year.  The rooms themselves are large, well appointed and very comfortable.

5. Butler Hospitality

Butler services is part of the VIP package you can add on to your stay at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort. I highly recommend this additional hospitality service since it also gives you access to the VIP Whale Watching Lounge which is a semi-private eating, drinking and hanging out area at the end of the Towers.  Your butler will assist you, guide you, get you, remind you and take care of anything you need (within reason).  We happened to forget some items we needed and rather than having to run around looking for them, our butler tracked them down and delivered them to our room.  He arranged all transportation for us as well as guiding us through every other check in/check out process.  It is very much like having your own concierge.  I highly recommend requesting Alan or Israel, they were outstanding.

6. Fine Cuisine

The fine dining options at Pueblo Bonito Resort blow away most all inclusive resorts.  All of the options at each location within the Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos umbrella are included in your all inclusive package.  You can eat at the Steak House at Quivira Golf Club, Siempre, Peninsula, Rose & Los Cabos restaurants, La Frida, Etc.  Each one offers a different dining experience.  There are surcharges for certain high end selections.  Every one offers something different to fit your culinary desires, but an absolute must is La Frida.  I’ve eaten a lot of places around the world and I’d put La Frida in my top 5.  The unique combinations and flavors was mouth watering.  Ice cream for salad dressing, short ribs with Mezcal and lava cake all blew our minds with complex yet incredible flavors.

7. All Inclusive:

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort offers an all inclusive stay.  That makes for an even more relaxing experience.  You don’t have to worry about all the additional costs to eat and drink, and can simply enjoy your stay.  That doesn’t mean “everything” is included.  There are lists provided about which drinks and foods are additional costs. But if you just want to enjoy the stay without worrying about food, drink, entertainment or transportation, everything is included and done exceptionally well.  Things like cooking classes, tequila tasting and other experiences are highly recommended and included.

8. Armonia Spa

The Armonia Spa at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort has some of the best massage therapists in the world.  While personally this isn’t my cup of tea; my wife thoroughly enjoyed the experience from start to finish.  She has enjoyed numerous high end spas around the world while I enjoy golf and she said that the therapist at Armonia is the best she’s ever had.  Our friends confirmed the same thing that these are the best and have some unique techniques that surpass a typical spa experience. If you stay at Pacifica, this is a “must do” as part of your stay.  The additional cost is well worth the additional relaxation.

9. Water Adventures

The Baja Peninsula comes to an end at Los Cabos. The east side is the Sea of Cortez and the west side is the Pacific Ocean.  If you want to swim in the ocean, Pueblo Bonito Rose and Los Cabos are on the Sea of Cortez side and sit very close to the Arch and Land’s End.  There are numerous water activities available just steps from the beach.  We took a glass bottom boat tour around Land’s End and got close and personal with both above and below the water sights.  Whales come in close too so you can get a sense of their size and beauty.  The guides will show you all the rock formations and what they mean.  Bonita Tours does an outstanding job in just a short 1 hour round trip experience. There is parasailing, jet skis, yachts, catamarans, snorkeling, and deep sea diving easily accessible from Pueblo Bonito.

10. Future at Quivira

While inside the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica complex it is tranquil and relaxing, the moment you leave the resort area you hear jack hammers, trucks, construction workers building new resorts, housing and infrastructure  to welcome more guests.  Quivira is part of those expansion projects too with 18 more holes planned for homeowners.  This will relieve the tee-sheet so that more resort guests can enjoy Quivira.  The routing of the new course will be tucked away between ridges and valleys just up the way from the current course.  It will have numerous ocean views from high points, but no ocean holes.  It is currently slated to be a “private” course for Quivira members. It looks to be a strong routing that Jack has planned for the next 18 holes at Quivira.

Summary

Quivira is the centerpiece of the Pueblo Bonito Resort in Los Cabos. It is one of my favorite golf courses in the world.  The ocean holes offer beauty and challenge.  The range is the most beautiful and the whole experience is the most enjoyable 4:45 you’ll spend on a golf course.  The food, snacks and drinks just add to the round. Pacifica is the adult only resort closest to the golf course.  Access to everything is included with your stay at any of the Pueblo Bonito properties.  Upgrade to the VIP experience for even more intimate dining, more relaxing lounging, and butler service.  If you are looking for a couples or guys golf get away, Quivira at Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos is one of my favorite.  Great weather, views, food, lodging and service make this your next vacation destination.
