Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood Review

The Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood went into my bag for the last 5 rounds of golf. I was fit for it by the local Titleist fitter.  It served 2 purposes in my bag: mini-driver and fairway wood.

I could bomb it off the tee just as easily as I could hit it off the fairway. I also tested it in the IGR Office by Carl’s Place DIY Simulators.  The combination of on-course testing and FlightScope numbers proved the new Titleist GT 2 Fairway Wood is long and easy to hit.

This is my definitive Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood Review.

GT Tech

Titleist finally jumped on the carbon fiber construction material for woods.  But in true Titleist fashion they are doing it slightly different than other brands with a seamless “Thermoform Crown”.  This is an “ultra-lightweight design, born from a new Proprietary Matrix Polymer.”  It allow Titleist to  move more weight around for CG manipulation while still offering pure Titleist feel, looks and performance.

Get Fit

I’ve got a pretty good handle on my specs from years of testing.  However it seems like every time I do a fitting it reveals something about the companies products that I might not have expected.  I always gravitate toward the low spin clubs from companies because of my high spin swing.  Normally that would have me in the GT 3 model for fairway woods.  However after a couple swings with the GT2 13.5 fairway wood it became obvious that was the best fit. They didn’t create the GT2+ like previous years, just the 13.5* head which is a little bigger.  But it is low spin too, especially with the right shaft.  The Oban Kiyoshi Purple  is the perfect balance of low spin and flat launch for a perfect fit.

Mini-Driver

The “mini-driver” fad is back and for good reason.  Sometimes drivers are tough to hit consistently and fairway woods just find the fairway consistently.  The desire to have a club that hits like a fairway wood but goes like a driver.  The Titleist GT2 13.5* Fairway Wood is like a mini-driver.  I hit it off the tee 250-260 repeatedly.  That is long, but also very consistent.  I felt very confident standing over the ball with this mini-driver in hand.

All-Around Performance

The problem with mini-drivers is that they are kind of a niche club since they aren’t going to be easy to hit off the fairway or out of the rough.  But since the Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood is really a mini-driver, it is first and foremost a fairway wood, it actually hits very easily from every lie.  I went with the low lofted model which has a pretty good sized footprint too, but still very easy to hit off the fairway.  I could bomb it at par 5 green in 2.  I had no problem getting enough lift, even it is was a 13.5* head.  I even found hitting out of the rough fairly easy as long as it wasn’t too thick.  I really like how this club is so easy to hit off the tee or any lie.

Summary

The new Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood is a gamer.  It combines the low loft of a mini-driver power with true fairway wood performance from any lie.  GET FIT!!  It really opens up the performance qualities of the clubs for your specific needs.  The GT2 13.5* head is a perfect fit in my bag for tee shots or long approach shots.  I love the new tech of this fairway wood and found the best performance for a fairway wood all year.
